Pre-fitting Wheel Protection

Featured Replies

Morning All

With the pending arrival of a set of 16" Spiders and having seen the brake dust stains on my OEM wheels during a recent wash I feel i should do some damage limitation before they are fitted.

My car is generally washed every month or 6 weeks (yes i know!) so the state of my original wheels is probably my own fault but I've seen various threads about wheel wax and sealants that makes brake dust less prone to attaching itself and wash off easier.

What should i buy?

Where do i buy it?

How much is it likely to be?

Is it actually going to help more than if i just started washing more regularly?!

Thanks

Cliff

Thanks Chris

Cheaper than i was expecting too!!

I got new wheels put on my car last week.

I took them off within 24 hrs of getting them so that I could protect them with two coats of Jetseal 109 - inside and out....

Chemical Guys - Jetseal 109

Cliff - having posted the above I've just realised I have around 2/3rds of a tub of the Chemical Guys Wheel Guard left - are you thinking what i'm thinking?

+1 on the Chemical Guys Jetseal 109, If I were you I'd put two coats of it on then you will get that little bit extra gloss and possibly more longevity from it too, But and its a big but (no not mine:D) Keep on top of washing them to ease the cleaning.

Thanks Paul - I'd blame the poor, or too good, weather for not washing often enough but its really just laziness :)

Andy - I believe I see whats about to happen - drop me a PM

You really need to clean the wheels weekly, even if you dont clean the rest of the car. Leaving brake dust on wheels for to long can lead to major pitting as the brake dust eats into the wheel. After 4 years of regular weekly cleaning the wheels on my old vRS were still perfect.

I will add my 2p in here although I am a little late in the day...........:o

For me I wouldn't hesitate in using anything else other than CG Jetseal 109 and this can be sourced from various places for around £23 but it's worth every penny. The joy of Jetseal is that it can be used on the bodywork as well with some impressive results.........

With your wheels waxed as Chris_Focus has said, they clean so easily weeks and months down the line..........

Thanks Mannyo - I know my cleaning schedule is to blame and i'm lucky to not have any pitting (except where a rim fell on its face on a gravel drive!) but between some of the spokes is a little yellow.

Hopefully the new wheels will be just the prompt for more regular celaning that i need

Thanks Baker - if a recommendation comes from you i know it must be good stuff! :D

Although i may leave it off the paintwork until that itself has had a bit of polish

In a complete noob way how is it applied?

the blurb on the link Andy posted says microfibre pad or applicator (which make me think of tampons) but having neither of the those can i just put it on a cotton rag as I would of with T-Cut back in the day?

I use these Applicator Pads:

- Terry Applicator Pads (twin pack) Elite Car Care

Which look like this to use with the Jetseal in the picture:

Don't like the look of that microfibre laying on the gravel! - hope it's out for washing? :D

Finding the Klasse SG / Sonus Acrylic Glanz successful on my wheels. Two coats of the Klasse SG originally applied then maintained after washing with one quick and very easy application of Sonus Acrylic Glanz. Controls the brake dust making them very easy to clean with a good shine.

Jetseal 109 rival ?

Your mean the Waffle Weave Drying Towel, don't panic it's not for use on bodywork........

Could well be mate but not used it so couldn't comment...........:o

Kwikfit could learn something about alloy wheel care from the above picture :D (Hint for kwikfit people look at what's underneath the wheel)
