Timing chain

Featured Replies

I ordered a timing chain for my wifes 1.4 mpi i pick it up Tuesday will start it on Wednesday any tips would be great I was surprised when i asked the Skoda parts guy for a sump gasket and a timing cover oil seal he replied they use silicone but there is a timing cover gasket i ordered that and a oil filter:)

PS I did do a search

Ive done them on Estelles, rapids and favorits, which have basicly the same engine. Ive always used a sump gasket, and i will only use silicone as a last resort on an engine. I would sooner make a gasket and seal it with Welseal

Hi, I've been lurking about on here for a while as my Girlfriend has a 1.4MPi fab, the timing chain needs doing pretty badly, its rattling like buggery and its idle and power are all over the place.

I've also had a search but not been able to find a guide to fitting the new timing sprockets and chain, does anyone know if theres a guide detailing what needs doing?

Could someone describe the procedure if not?

One thing i have found while searching is that apparently there is a discrpancy regarding the timing marks on new crank sprockets, the dot being one tooth out of line. might be worth you looking into this, Fig1

Dave.

There is a guide on here for the 1.3 Felicia (damned if I can find it, though :o ), which is pretty much the same procedure...

well not a expensive chain I asked for a sump gasket again and was told there is no gasket made for the sump I then asked my local car spares in case there was a aftermarket one No henrys2.gif

Will add details when i am not sick i thought new oil and filter and cleaning the sump would stop the oil light coming on after driving 20Min's:mad:timing2.jpg

Timing chain

1 Drain Oil and Coolant

2 Take wheel off and inner wing cover put the car in gear i jammed my jack handle on the foot brake loosen the big bolt on the crankshaft pulley its Tight

3 Take alternator/aircon belt off

I took the tensioner pulley right off by taking the big rubber mount at the back of the aircon pump off there is 3 alan key bolts holding it on (No need) the bolt in the middle of the mount holds pulley shaft in

4 Take the crankshaft pulley off

Be careful the woodruff key came out when i took mine off put it back in if it come's out

I used a small crowbar to ease it off

5 Take of the belt pulley wheel

6 Loosen the 7 alan key bolts holding the timing case cover on

7 Split the metal coolant pipe and rubber hose that runs under the sump

There is 2 torque bolts holding the pipe to the engine one at the front and one at the back

8 Take the sump off

A few 10mm and i think i used a 5/8s

When you r under the car take the 10mm bolt out of the bracket that holds the oil lifter

9 Take the 7 alan key bolts out off the timing case cover take cover of

Note ware the small bolt came from

10 Take out the torque bolt holding the oil pump drive sprocket

If you still have the brake jammed on and the car in gear it will come out easy

I used a small crowbar to ease the sprocket off watch the woodruff key

11 Take off the duplex chain and cogs

Small crowbar again to ease them off note the way the came off there is a ridge on inner side of the crank cog

12 Clean the old gasket from both timing cover and engine with small blade

I used thinner's to clean everything

13 Optional i dropped the engine the chain side

3 Bolts

14 I set the new chain and cogs up the way the came off

I had made sure nothing MOVED

15 Then put the crankshaft pulley back on insert the big bolt and tighten it up it will pull the cog and woodruff key all the way home

I then took the car out of gear and let the foot brake off and then turned the engine by hand

16 Take the pulley back off put new gasket on

You may have to put it back in gear and jam the foot brake on again

I put the gasket on the engine side with a little grease to keep it in place

19 Now put the timing case cover back on

20 Put all pulleys back on

21 Put belt back on

I found it hard to get it back on i left the belt pulley wheel to the last i used a pair of mole grips on the tension pulley i found pushing it upwards from under the car let me get the belt on the belt pulley easily

22 Clean the silicone off sump and engine and replace

I washed the sump down with thinner's

23 Put on oil filter add oil and coolant

I Started and stopped the engine as quick as i could a few times to get the oil moving then started her up left her running sweet
