i have a 03 rej fabia. New to car world and this is my first car. Bought car in Feb,09. Someone told me yesterday it's not normal for a car to able to shift gears without engaging clutch while ignition is off. My knowledge is limited in CAR, but this is how I it was when I bought it from Evans Halshaw. Is there something wrong with my Gear box or cluth Or is it normal to Skoda Fabia ? Can someone advice please....thanks

Every manual car I have ever known lets you change gear with the engine/ignition off and without pressing the clutch in.

Yes, every car I have ever driven or even played in as a kid has let me do this. The only thing I can think of is that the person who told you this parks in gear but without the handbrake, in which case if the car's on a slope, the transmission winds up and you can't get it out of gear without applying the clutch. In all other circumstances, you should be able to shift in and out of gear as much as you like when the engine's off...

The person that told you may have been told that him self and never actually tested.

I don;t really know anything about gear boxes.. but I'd guess shifting whith cold oil isn't adviseable??

My car will let you shift a bit when off, but then starts to get notchy which i put down to above.
