Petrol vrs,seems a bit thirsty.

Featured Replies

I've only had my vrs a few days but even when I'm driving steady it seems a bit thirsty.

To and from work (7 miles each way,not much traffic but a few lights) I'm only getting 28

mpg. It drops much lower when I boot it. This seems a lot less than you guys are getting.

One thing I have noticed is that the air filter hasn't been changed for 16000 mile. Could

this be the problem or am I just expecting too much?

7 miles isn't much really, that will be what's hurting the MPG I think. The engine will just have warmed up and got going by the time you stop again!

Also, a dirty air filter won't be helping either. I'd fit a proper replacement panel from K&N/Pipercross/Green myself. I saw an MPG increase when I swapped out the OEM one. Maybe as it was quite dirty and/or the aftermarket ones are more efficient? I plumped for a Pipercross one.

I think I'll get an OEM one tomorrow and try that.Engine seems to warm up very quickly so was

expecting more.Like I said maybe I am expecting too much!

Have to agree with you mate!

Add to that if you live in Sheffield, you have city traffic & hills too! Driving style and using 95 or 99 RON fuel, what extra weight you have in the car etc, etc, all will impact on fuel economy.

Taking that lot into account I think you are doing ok with 28mpg! In standard trim I used to get about 38 - 40mpg on a good (120 mile) motorway run & about 26mpg if it was nothing but short trips round town.

I've lost a few MPG since i've been tinkering  but I can still get 36 - 37mpg with care, thats using 99RON fuel.

However a particularly spirited run around the Peaks can see that drop to single figures!!!

As they say you don't anything for nowt!

@ 16K the air filter should be OK. If you are trying to achieve better MPG, you are

probably not letting the engine rev enough and just plonking around in too high a gear.

I can get 40+ on the way to work (no rush), but it can drop into the low 20s on the way home :)

LOL, my mpg is the opposite, low 20s getting to work (on time), and a nice 40 lazy drive home, cruise set to 70 on the motorway (impersonating a copper...!:D)

I never got much more than 28 to be honest doing those sorts of runs.

Gord – I went from the 1.8T Petrol Mk I vRS to the 2.0 CR Diesel Mk II vRS and I already seem to be getting double the MPG I did with the petrol unit I was 25-30 about town IIRC. I know a different engine to the TFSI & diesel comparison but astonishing the difference in MPG to me. The VAG Petrol units have long be known for guzzling juice, esp the 1.8T across the range, cant see the TFSI being a big saver overnight from the VAG history at this level.

28 seems pretty good for what you're doing to be honest.

I wouldn't expect to get more.

It'll go up to 35+ but only on longer runs with little or no stop starting.

I'd also have to agree - 28mpg given the driving conditions is pretty ok in my book. At the end of the day you have a petrol 2 litre turbo engine under the bonnet.

Lee

I get about 33 if i'm drivign for a few hundred miles, and have got a maximum of 37 whilst pootling round at 50 between Dover and St Mary's bay (mostly twisty 50s and little start stop)

When people talk about 40+ i just assume they've got a diesel, or that their trip computer is set to 'optomistic' setting.

Over 1200 miles when i went to scotland, both trip computer and actual calculation worked out within 0.5 mpg - at about 33 IIRC. That was sitting at an indicated 90* on the motorway.

* To avoid the "you shouldnt be admitting to speeding on anopen forum" style comments i will point out that of course this is just me bragging to make myself look big and clever and at no time did i exceed the legal speed limit ;)

28mpg for a petrol VRS isn't that bad - a friend of mine can't get that from a 2.0 naturally aspirated Impreza.

Diesels are the only way to get really good fuel consumption as they only burn the fuel they need rather than needing a minimum amount before combustion from the spark plug can sustain itself, so when you're driving at considerably less than the engine's peak power (Where a lot of lower speed cruising takes place) a diesel will run on less fuel. Diesel has a higher calorific value per litre than petrol too, so 1 litre of Diesel contains more energy than 1 litre of petrol, but that difference is only about 10%.

Gord, you don`t say what you have come from for comparison.I must admit that it was a bit of a shock coming from a fugal but boring 1.6 fsi Octy to my vRS. However with a lot of restraint my average MPG seems to be increasing. On average its about 35 on a mixed run.

For a non modded vRS that seems about right to be honest as Lee has already said.

I don't get much more than that round town etc (usually around 28-30mpg)

On Motorways i can get around 42mpg with an *Accurised* trip computer but i also have Stage 2 Revo which does improve economy when driven at/around NSL

As Lee has said you have a 200bhp Turbo Petrol engine under your bonnet and if your worried about economy you bought the wrong car imho (im not having a go just incase it sounds like i am)

Just recently I almost ran my tank down all the way (not actually on purpose - silly mistakes).

However as I'd just brimmed my tank a week earlier I was able to do some maths as to what I'm seeing MPG wise.

It worked out to around 33mpg - 34mpg on Tesco 99 (Only mention the fuel because some claim Super gives better results).

It's what I expect from "normal" dual-carriage, motorway, back-road driving.

Now let me hit the motorway, let me cruise at around 75mph - 80mph and mpg will climb.

You've got 2L, a turbo and on a good motorway journey it really isn't too bad.

Your'e probably right, I'd got it into my head that I'd get about 30+,so was expecting too

much.I did check the air filter though and it was filthy so I replaced it.

Will let you know if it makes a difference

Good move to change the air filter.

Overall, as has already been said, 7 miles each way of urban(ish) traffic will not be good for consumption. I know I drive a vRS TDI but comparatively any form of urban driving gets my consumption at 38-39mpg BUT as soon as I'm out on the open road its easily 40+ mpg - there is many a thread on here that confirms a 10mpg difference between the TFSI and TDI vRSs.

Go and take it out on a run at the weekend up into/onto the hills/moors etc. and have some fun. :D:rolleyes: Enjoy.

you might want to try a 15 mile drive one sunday morning, no booting it just a lesuirly pass and let us know what sort of figure you got for it. I found today my mpg can increase by 5mpg if the engine is already warm on a 9 mile drive to work. However i can get anything from 34-45mpg on a n/a car but my best has been in the 50's (petrol). You also need to take into account traffic and how warm it is, how many times you hit the pedal hard etc.

Sorry to hijack the thread but can I ask what you mean by not letting the engine rev enough? Do you mean it's taking longer to warm up, and so is not reaching it's optimum temperature as quickly?

I only ask as I tend to pootle along in higher gears on my commute (mainly town stop start driving for 4-5 miles) as I thought it would be better for a colder engine than reving too high before the engine's warm. I get an average of 26mpg which I'm not unhappy with given that it seems really frugal compared to my old impreza.

I suspect I'm just looking for an excuse to rev the engine more!

You'd be fine as longs the engine isn't chugging along in 6th at 25mph and cold. If it's running smooth it's fine.

When the engine is warm mine will run in 6th at 30mph quite happily.

optimum rev range for best mpg is 1.5-2.5k rpm

Changed air filter, got 30.7mpg today,(from 28mpg) with identical driving, will keep you posted to see if this continues

I do a 12 mile round trip daily...and struggle to get the 28 you get, usually ending up around 26. However a decent 80 mile round trip today at 50-60mph, gave me over 35mpg...& by the sounds of things...I should be happy with these figures? I don't do a big mileage, so I can live with these figures, but like you, expected better...but then I've never had anything this powerful before! - we can't have it all can we !

Gave car some welly today,26mpg:thumbup:

I travel into attercliffe everyday and manage about 34-35mpg in stop start conditions in a 1.9TDI, so i dont think its too bad.

Considering my 2.0T Vauxhall i had last year did about 21mpg around town lol.
