Is it true??

Featured Replies

That when you get the Octy 1.8 20v Turbo 180bhp chipped you usually have to replace the clutch shortly after?

I am getting mine chipped next week and was just wondering if what I heard was true?

Cheers

Depends how you drive. I had the car remapped at about 15,000km and my clutch is still good at 84,000.

Not chipped :D

Who is "chipping" it for you?

Good point - remapped :D

Sorry my bad, re-mapped was the word I was looking for lol!

So basically the people who have informed of the possible problem just drive hard everywhere lol

I obviously drive like a granny - still on my first set of brake pads after 5 years

No too my knowledge.

I don't think we have had many complaints with octavia on the forums.

Fabias on the other hand lol

Maybe your source doesn't know his fabias from his octavias

Jesus, I changed the orignals at around 40k, and I'm on my fourth set at 90k lol

Mind most of the day to day driving is in traffic

It's often said about Mk4 Golfs over here - maybe the early cars had weaker clutches - as most golfs here that enthusiasts can afford are around 1998-2001.

if its just a remap I would have thought not. obviously things will wear slightly quiker as the demands made on them will be higher, but not to the extent that it will die straight away. if you change to a big turbo set up, then its a different story :D

5 thumbs on a small keyboard :D

If the remap has very high torque at low revs which then tails off then you have more chance of wrecking the clutch, especially if you drive it hard.

The better remaps will have a decent (but not ridiculous) amount of torque at low revs but still hold it well further up the revs.

See if you can have a look at a RR graph of a car with that remap before you choose to buy.

So fingers crossed I should not encounter any problems then!

Remap did mine in after a couple of months

I was worried about this when I had mine done but the bloke at Angel Tuning was assuring me that the Octys have the same clutch as the Leon Cupra R, so good for up to 250ish BHP.

It's the torque that will kill it though, so a more 'progressive' rather than 'aggressive' remap will be fine. Mine obviously has more pull low down now, but properly comes into it's own in midrange so I'm not too worried about it. I've said it now so that means it'll be f***ed in 2 months

As someone has already said, it all depends on the remap and driving style, and

diesels have a greater chance of burning out due to the much higher torque levels.

Where are you getting the map done?

So fingers crossed I should not encounter any problems then!

As I mentioned earlier its worth posting up who you are thinking of using - just to see if anyone on here has had experience with them.

There are more and more companies appearing on Ebay etc doing £100 remaps - and although some may know what they are doing there are plenty that I wouldn't trust to go anywhere near my car.

A guy who comes into my work is a mapper for Revo, have heard good things so I am putting my trust in him!

Also would it be better to fit a Forge Air intake before getting it remapped? I already have a cat back milltek exhaust fitted to my VRS!
