Window tints, what should I have done? what have you had done?

Featured Replies

I've been toying with the idea of having my windows tinted. Mr Insurance says I'm allowed 30%, and the Local plod don't mind as long as its not Limo tints all round.

Just been to see a company called DB Tintz in Kettering, Northants. They can do light smoke 20% or Medium 35%. They are charging

I have 20% on the fronts And 50% on the rears and rear screen, thought it might look odd but i like it and cos the rears are darker it gives the whole car a darker look,i got a good discount on mine and paid

Remember that the rules on tints when they say 30% at the front include the tint in the standard glass. Putting a 20% film on means that there is now a 50% tint on the window. That is illegal and can void your insurance.

I've got 30% film on the rears and nothing on the front as I can't risk the insurance being invalid (I originally had 20% on the front).

Steve

steve - i'm relatively sure that my fabia classic has no tints at all. don't suppose you could verify that only the VRS has tints already done to it? and that all te other models don't?

classic dont ahve tints but comfort and elegance a vRS models do

when i had my focus estate i had 35% on front, 65%(i think) on the back and 80% on the rear screen, looked the dogs nuts imo

it was great sat in traffic, guy next to you is looking then you can the thought go through his head that he don't know if you are looking back so quickly looks away

i've got 20 on the sides and 40 on the rear, same as Pauls black vRS... had it done at the same place (AutoKraft) but they are in Stoke so its alittle out of the way for you.

Paid

Had 35% on the sides and 22% on the back window on our silver Scooby. Looked great without being too dark and never got stopped by the police. I'm not sure if the film they put on was 35% or whether the combined film and existing window tint was 35%.........

Chris

sorry got mine back to front, had 40% on the sides and 20% on the back... the lower the % the darker the tint !

I have limo black on rear half - car came with them and I like it. Fronts did have the same but I removed them for my own safety (was dangerous at night) - Could contemplate a 20% film as long as the existing glass isn't tinted AT ALL! :D

Also have a limo black sunstrip tint, which passed an MOT ;)

don't think mot check window tints do they?

don't think mot check window tints do they?

True - but there's something about sunstrips intruding into the "swept area" on the windscreen - which mine does. I was ready to argue the toss because the rule on sunstrips is about opaque ones, and mine is merely tinted, albeit quite heavily. I think mechanic matey knew this and never mentioned it when I picked up the car.

I have great difficulty understanding why anyone would want to reduce their ability to see out of their cars - not least at night or in poor visibility - by applying a greater degree of tinting than the modest amount which now comes as standard on many cars. Would you be happy if you had been born with eyes which let in 30% (or whatever figure) less light? I think not. :(

Mine came with.. simply wouldn't look the same without it... Passed MOT and plod has not mentioned it... yet... :D

which is why I removed my front tints, Denis. For that reason alone, but seriously 90% of the reason why I'd get the fronts lightly tinted again is to stop people looking in and seeing my nice shiny HU and anything I may have left accidentally in the car (not visible from front screen) Its more of a privacy issue to be honest, not a cruizer look. There's no way I'd do it if I wasn't happy with the safety aspect. I was kind of hoping there was a film that was 100% reflective/black from the outside, and nothing from the inside, but I don't think it exists. :(

Its only a 'one-way' tint, it lets less light in from the outside but looks normal looking out.

I quite agree! Even if you can see out alright it stops you being able to make eye-contact with cyclists, pedestrians etc and so ultimately compromises their safety. :(

The only reason to have tints is if you are still having a problem with the fact you drive a Skoda!

there is a tint that has a reflective quality to it thus looks darker from the outside in certain conditions than it actually is, this very tint is the one used on both mine and monkey boys car and was fitted by said company in Stoke (yes ColinD Stoke-on-Trent)

if the glass gets a full on shine from the sun it appears darker than it does in low light conditions, in the dark you can see the interior of the car albeit darker than the original glass.

i wouldnt have gone any darker than 40% on the side windows of the car though and the guy that did the work recomended i didnt as well.

Colin - if you want the number let me know.

Nigel, I wouldn't mind the number good excuse to get a few extra miles on the car! Do you know the name of the tint you had fitted or is it the standard one he fits?

I'll agree with you there, normal I think your a bit of a fuddy that is set in his ways (I mean that with the greatest of respect), but not this time. Back in the old Paxo days I was looking into gettin this done, for the looks and privacy, but though better of it due to the fact you just said.

But, I would still be tempted on the fabia just to keep the praying eyes out so to speak.

Nigel pm the number if you wouldn't mind I may have a chat with them

So if some think tints on cars are silly, why do car manufacturers always advertise their goods with tinted windows, whether TV ads or on magazine pages. The "quality brand" cars are always have blacked out windows, think BMW, Audi, SAAB etc.

Regarding limiting visibility, my front side windows are 25% tint (rears 50%) and although there is a difference inside, I would argue in certain situations, they make for better visibility, e.g. low sun. At night I have no problem with side visibility.

Point taken that other road/pavement users may not be able to see the whites of your eyes, but then again, this should mean they will not assume you have seen them and continue regardless as is the case in some accident situations, I'm sure.

:o I'm flattered.

I find tints increase saftey dramatically..

the chances of me missing seeing something from side/rear are slim to none existant.. however the chances of me being dazzled from side / rear by sunlight (especially in winter months) and thus missing something in front of me... are substantially reduced.

I drive round with the rear privacy blind up all the time right now.... when my tints are done I will not need to....:D

Equally i dont have to worry about taking risks when parked as my valuables are less visible and my windows wont smash as easily... Win-Win.
