I'm trying to figure out what kind of engine oil I can use in my car.

The last time a service was done I used "Acdelco SAE 5W30" (part no 88862597) fully synthetic, this meets the following specs "VW 504.00 and VW 507.00". Now, went to Halfords and according to their book they recommend "Halfords 5W/40 Fully Synthetic Oil 5L" which is this one see here

That Halfords oil meets VW502.00 and 505.00, however its a different viscosity to the one I used last time (which I think was what another car parts dealer said I needed, don't know if i can name them here).

Page 154 of the fabia I user manual (printed off from on-line as i don't have the paper version) says I can use "VW 501 01" "VW502.00" or "VW504.00". So now of course I'm confused, have I bought the wrong oil or should it be OK, I understand about viscosity, and cold weather etc, but would feel better if someone more knowledgeable about this than I can confirm the oil should be fine and even though viscosity is not the same, the fact that both oils are in spec, they are interchangeable ? :confused:

I'm on fixed service intervals and its on '05 plate, rest is in subject.

504.00 / 507.00 supercedes 502.00 / 505.00 and is a better super duper "longlife" oil (up to 2 yr/20,000 miles). All are suitable for your Fabia 1.2 - the benefit of a 5w/30 over a 5w/40 is better fuel economy and a bit more power.
