remapping, insurance rises?

Featured Replies

hi, i am thinking about getting my vRS remapped, prob. with jabba; could anyone tell me what sort of insurance premium rises i could expect:thumbdwn:

bearing in mind i am 19

thanks Dan

I got a quote for mine, was looking at an extra £200 a year for a remap to 170bhp

23 y/o, 5 years NCD

always wondered would they know??

as in if you crash, would they plug into the vagcom and check the map?

i know technically its fraud or whatever (your not insured..), just wondered if they could be bothered to check every crashed car

Yes, as a matter of course on written-off Fabias many insurers do a full scan of the ECU. It will save them thousands in pay-outs so it's well worth it on a car that is known to be a remappers favourite.

Bottom line - if you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford the remap. Plus, the standard 130bhp will get you to a corner faster than the standard suspension and brakes will slow you down to get you round it.

Oh, and someone I worked with had an accident in an uninsured car where a child was hurt (not killed, just hurt), and he got such a rough time from the rest of the office, he left. Your insurance doesn't just cover you. It has an impact on anyone else involved as well.

Mine went up £21 with a tuning box upto 160bhp

What companies are these quotes with and also the areas you live in.

Getting mine chipped would be great but already mentioned I think the handling and braking needs attention first.

i asked admiral last year and they said they would not cover me.... in my experiance and other posts on here most mainstreem insurance companys will either not cover you or increase your insurance soo much that it is not possible to insuare it.

Im with Adrian Flux who put me with highways.... cost for my insurance after my hybrid turbo fitting and map to around 220Bhp was an extra £40.

You could be talking up to 500 if they will touch you, which most wont. And if you dont declare it you will invalidate your policy and get your self blacklisted.

Surely the smart thing to do is phone your broker and ask them?

Can't answer for the age issue but when I was looking round for a vRS last year there was a remapped one I was interested in. Insurer (Frizzell) said it wouldn't affect the premium. Had upgraded suspension and brakes as well.

thanks for all the replies, will prob leave it alone then, at least for a little while, until i get a bit older and then tell the insurance - do it the legal way

cheers Dan

No harm in asking them, it could be only a few £££

When I had my Ibiza I had to explain what my mods were, they hadn't a clue what half were and i'm guessing made up a figure on the spot!

mine will be going up £40 (£13 of that is an admin fee) with Direct Line.

Bend over, boy!

OMG! I just got a quote for my next renewal, £577 fully comp 3 years no claims, 3 years license held (I'll be 27).. seems fair enough, gone down a couple hundred.

Did the same quote with the car lowered upto (or should that be down to) 5cm.. Now the lowest is 805!

Is this normal?

No, get a quote from an insurance company that likes mods!

You pay quite alot for your insurance, i'm 25 (in a week or so) and have a few more no claims but pay £360...

:thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn:I Feel sorry for you guys...In 21 and mine is 1200 a year would of been 2000 if i hadnt had paid up in full.:thumbdwn:

Oh and thats completly standard.

Don't underestimate no claims and location (though, I'm not sure where you are)..

The 1st no claims is about 40% on it's own.. so they do add up. Also, My post code is greater london and it's on the road overnight as well as on the road at work. And like I said, License for only 3 years still makes me a newbie on the experience and reaction front.

My wife (age undisclosed, but she's over 21) has just been quoted £219 for our vRS with her as the main driver and me as a named driver with two other vehicles in the household. And it has almost every modification you can think of EXCEPT a remap (17" wheels, Eibachs, Front and Rear ARBs, black grille, splitter, MFD and Maxidot.

That's with M&S of all people. And as long as the remap doesn't increase power by more than 25% then it won't affect the premium:thumbup:

We do both have full, protected NCDs and no points or convictions, but even so, that does seem quite reasonable.

Likely your insurance co wont touch you mapped.
