vRS Growl On a, errr, CR TDI?

Featured Replies

Could do with some help/advice!

I have an Octavia vRS CR TDI.

To cut a long story short I'm wanting to know whether or not anything can be done to it to make it sound 'more sporty'? I've heard Fabia vRS's sound very meaty but they have been tinkered with a fair bit.

Constraints:

Additions/replacements that won't affect warranty (or can be cheaply/easily swapped back to OEM for any dealer work). Not sure if exhaust would come under this? Cost?

Extra bhp is irrelevant, just want it sportier sounding (ok, maybe just louder!)

Quite like the psssst noise from the turbo/dump thingy (technical!) so can this be made more apparent?

If I'm in cuckoo land tell me!

A mate has just replaced his Air Filter Box and it's made quite a difference on his MK1 vRS, wondered if anything this easy to swap can be achieved on the CR TDI?

Thanks!

ive got a cr tdi vrs

drive it like a diesel

the torque makes up for the lack of noise, the car speaks for its self, doesnt need a pnis extension to make the car better

be proud you have the better version-diesel

not the one thats just for show!

enjoy it the way skoda built it!

I love the car, but if I can improve one part (to me) without effecting any of the others then why not?

Plus going from a Corrado VR6 to this is quite a difference on the noise front! Trying to claw some of it back! :)

A full Milltek exhaust system would help. You could get more induciton noise with a K57i but then you'll have heat soak to content with. I like the sound of mine now with the Milltek downpipe and remap. Don't waste your money on one of those electronically controlled diesel blow off valves, they sound stupid.

Should have bought a PD TDI if you wanted a growl:D

How does a diff exhaust change the warranty?

Would it oly affect the exhaust system or the whole engine?

I have heard of turbos not being covered due to a turbo back exhaust being fitted.

Yeah; mine (PD TDI) growls a treat. :D

Seriously; a K&N 57i will give you extra umph, particularly at the 'top end' plus as you want you'll get a good, but subtle, amount of induction roar and on/off throttle whooshing and hissing at low rpm (around town). Heat soak should not be an issue with some DIY shielding or, if you want a bit more of a professional look, you could try the new K&N Typhoon kit that has a custom designed heat shield 'thingy' as part of the kit.

Simple and cheap mod to get a bit more exhaust resonance/noise is to cut out the mid exhaust silencer.

My CR Tdi growls a bit when giving it the beans, very un-diesel like:D

Doesn't even sound like a diesel when idling:thumbup:

I think the induction kit sounds like the best option!

Will it affect the pssst?

You keep telling yourself that

Yes; along with whoosh, hiss and slurp (sucking noise). All depending on how you play with the throttle.

My PD sounds like a V8 when you rag it.

There's a word for that and they dangle between your legs :P

Im sorry but nothing will ever convince me a diesel sounds like a V8 till i hear it with my own ears :P :D

I'm looking at the K&N Induction Kit (circa £93) but I'm trying to find this 'Heat Shield Box' that I've seen mentioned on here?

Any ideas?

Also, is the Typhoon for £250ish worth the extra?

Thanks!

The 'heat shield box' is part of the Typhoon kit, hence the price it is - not sure if you can buy it separately.

I made my own 'heat shield' for the 57i kit with some corex plastic board, foil tin, cable ties and duck tape; cheap and effective, if not exactly pretty. It also serves well to minimise the ingress of water (spray) onto the filter and I kept the OE U shaped ducting to provide ram fed air to the bottom left corner (as viewed) of the filter area.

Here's a pic of the result;-

In my opinion no! It's a hell of a lot of money to pay for a few more bhp and a bit of induction noise.

For the same money you could probably get a remap. I'd go for the Bahnstormer approach if you've got your heart set on an Induction kit

I think you may have missed the point. The K&N Typhoon kit is a 57i kit with a custom designed heat/weather shield setup; essentially you are paying £130-£140 for the heat shield affair. Or are you saying that £130 for a heat shield is expensive?

HTH

I wonder how my DSG will cope with that monster. Hook it up to a miltek exhaust and get it remapped BRRRRAAAAP

Bahnstomer - what are the main advantages of fitting an induction kit? Are there noticeable differences in BHP and/or torque. Is turbo lag reduced?

Thanks :)

In a word yes (point not missed)..... did your heatshield set up cost £130 to put together ???

  • 2 years later...

Sorry to drag this old post up but I've been to some searching. I've had my octavia for 2 years in december and I've ignored, fought and blanked that pesky "Modding Bug" but its starting to win.

I dont want to go full remap on mine until out of warrenty as on the CR its a ECU out job, but I would like to improve the power (slightly) and noise. In the fabia the filter made it sound better, more "gruff". I've read a few posts on here and would like a little more info and feed back from those that have/are running a after market filter or induction kit.

1) Induction kit - was it worth the outlay against power vs sound vs cost? Which one did you go for? (does anyone have a video/sound clip before and after?)

2) Panel filter - as above

Thanks for any information

I was under the impression that a filter (or induction kit) has no or very little effect on power etc. with a diesel. The induction kit will give you a bit more noise but did not think it gave anything much in terms of performance. They do with a petrol but not a diesel as far as I know.

my custom map varied by 11bhp with K&N panel filter not in then in on same rolling road. Don't beleive if you just drop one in it magically adds power though not by that much anyway
