My new FL vRS CR tdi

Can I ask, is there any glitches with the TDi & DSG box configuration?

I've read that the DSG box struggles with the amount of torque that the 170 TDi chucks out & the gear changes are slightly hesitant.

Best thing to do would be to give one a lengthy test drive and see whether you like it.

I'd be reluctant to go back to a manual now :)

I'd like to, but there's just one teensy problem, none available to test drive. :(

I've driven a 3.2 TT with DSG and that has about the same amount of torque and there were no problems with hesitant gear changes.

Beautiful. Just stunning.

Well wear and best of luck with it bud!!!

I have a manual vRS on order at the moment but I almost ordered a DSG without even taking one for a test drive (none available). At the 11th hour I was given a DSG vRS for a test drive and for me there was just something missing with the whole driving experience. I didn't like the lack of involvement compared to the manual and I found negotiating roundabouts quite tricky because the gearbox didn't seem to react quick enough for my liking.

Nine years ago had a Nissan Primera 2.0 petrol with a CVT gearbox and that was excellent. It's probably not fair to compare the petrol/CVT to the Diesel/DSG as several dealers have said the DSG is better suited to the petrol engine.

These are only my personal views and comments and as others have said the best thing to do is find one to take for a long test drive.

I agree with your summary wholeheartedly. I wouldn't have another DSG diesel if it was going to be like the one in my Passat. Once it's rolling it's great, but roundabouts and some junctions are a truly nerve-jangling experience.

Mmm, you have got me thinking now.

The reason I'm considering a DSG box is the fact that I'm starting to develop the early signs of arthritis in my left leg (grand old age of 42,5) , now sometimes it's dead painful, other times it's reasonably fine to perfect.

So the DSG box would take the clutch pedal away and make things a little easier for me, but you've now put maybe a little doubt in my mind, whether it would be the best option for me.

I think if you are likely to suffer pain as a result of driving a manual rather than some slight annoyance at the odd take-up characteristics of the DSG gearbox, I'd say that that was an easy choice.

Unfortunately, for better or worse, VAG has taken to DSG in a big way, as have many other car manufacturers now and conventional torque convertor automatics are becoming less commonplace. They've had about 40 years more development than DSG, and there is plenty of scope for improvement. I'm coming to DSG from the Ford/PSA 6-speed automatic which is near perfect in my eyes. It's probably perfectly acceptable to most folks.

If you like the Octavia then I wouldn't let me put you off - you need to drive a TDI 170 with DSG for a long time in a place with lots of junctions and roundabouts to be sure you like the way it does things. Only you can make that choice ultimately.

any follow up on this?

was keen to see it all shiny!

I was also looking forward to the full detail pics but the selfish sod is obviously having far to much fun in his new car

Who me or the OP?

I've not got my new car yet!

Only went on a test drive yesterday, which has confused me even more!

Sorry for the confusion I was on about the OP :)
