Driving in France - Rear Fog light

Featured Replies

I'm taking my Dad on a nostalgic visit to Normandy soon in my RHD Roomster. My question is about the lights. I've read the previous threads about the headlights but what about the rear high intensity fog light. There is only one & it's on the offside. Will that be illigal in France ? Any input would be greatly appreciated. ( I have RTFM but couldn't see anything )

VCDS can enable dual reversing and fog lights I beleive, if you dont have VCDS or if there is no one in you area who has then your dealer should be able to do this for you

You will be fine to run your UK car with the foglight on the side it is now. There is no requirement for a UK registered car to have the foglight on the correct side, it only becomes an issue if you intend to register the car in France.

Fog light should be no problem, do need to put 'beam benders' on the front and display clearly a GB sign and have your driving licence (both parts for new style), V5C, insurance and passport to hand while your travelling in the car.

Other things you need to carry depending on the countries your intending to travel in are high visibility jacket, spare bulb kit, warning triangle, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and snow chains (winter only obviously).

You can get advice from the AA website and don't forget to inform your insurance and breakdown cover providers to ensure you have adequate cover for your trip.

Hope that helps.

If you have projector lights there's a lever inside the rubber headlamp cover that converts the dipped beam. You don't need a GB sign for driving in the EU if you have the EU number plate with the GB on it. And we get a lot of UK visiters here in Guernsey, most of them don't display a GB at all.

Re the rear fog light, I had a grey import Spacewagon, which had no rear fog light at all, for 8 years and took it to France several tine a year. It never bothered me because it satisfied my home Construction and Use legislation.

Re the visibility jacket. It is worth pointing out that the French legislation states it must be easily accessible from the driver's seat (i.e. not in boot) and put on before you get out of the car if you have to stop on the hard shoulder.
