PC RAM Help needed please....

Featured Replies

I build my own PCs but am unsure on this one as I am not qualled, just learned from exp lol.

I have heard that it is not advisable to mix RAM.

this is the specs I have:

M750SLI-DS4 Gigabyte motherboard (AM2+)

AMD Phenom X4 9950 cpu.

ATI HD4890 gfx card

2GB Corsair Dominator 1066Mhz 5.5.5.15 2.1v 2x1gb

4GB Buffalow FirestiX 1066Mhz 5.5.5.15 2.1v 2x2gb

XP pro 32bit

or

Vista Ultimate 64bit

When I tried all the ram together usin the XP it got as far as loading then didnt go into XP jus black screen.

XP worked with the 4gb in but only showed 3gb I know this is the limit.

Vista 64 workes with the 4gb but I have not tried it with all 6 yet. I want to know if I can put all 6 in antd it work?

I have 4 Ram slots 2 one colour and 2 another, iirc it has 2 channels so you can put 2 types of ram in it??? is that right?

cheers

It should work fine, you just have to make sure you have the 2 *2 GB and the 2*1GB in banks together.

Eg bank0 = 2*2GB bank1=2*1GB

You might find that things died with 6GB because the drivers couldn't load properly as being 32bit they couldn't address the RAM above 4GB. Check the bios setting to make sure there is a memory hole at 3.25GB etc. If there isn't an option then the bios might just put all memory mapped I/O to the top of RAM assuming it would never go over 32bits worth and things break.

If this is the case a bios update might fix this.

oh one thing?

will each bank be the same colour? i would say yes but not sure how component geeks think lol

no offence ment.

billy

depends on the motherboard.

Some have all slots the same colour. Usually if it's multiple colours (eg 2 white 2 blue) the ones of the same colours are same banks.

cheers mate,

well I tried it and it dunt work, it runs V slow and crashes or jus dunt load win.

thats with them in the same colour slots.take it it will run even worse if I put one of each in one bank and other ones in the other?

Might just be that particular config. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Have mixed RAM in my PC with 2x2GB sticks and then 2x512MB sticks while I was testing the RAM and it worked fine.

Also have 2x1GB and 2x512MB in my media PC and that works fine.

Like I say could just be the particular memory not working together well or that particular mobo that doesn't like mixed RAM.

cheers

ne mind spose I might try sellin it.

tis only few month old lol. should of got more to start really but I was not gonna go for Vista.

try updating the bios

try searching google for help/links [M750SLI Corsair Dominator (xxxx)] ; xxxx= ram model number

try searching the forums that belong to the makers of each ram stick

I had issues recently, but with help from uncle-bugaria and google and ram voltage increase, things worked themselves out.

good luck

Download this ISO and burn it to a CD:

http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso

Boot it and select the `try` option. This won't install anything to your computer but will tell you if it's the drivers being loaded above 32bits causing the issue.

I take it you've tried the address reset option in the PCI section of your bios and also tried windows in safe mode?

lol

yea

I have put it in and it doesnt work if I put the freq to 1066????????

They are all sposed to be 1066 but I have a feelin the dominator is only 800? When the system was built I used the default settings for the ram and it only came up as 800. I went in to the settins and changed it to 5.5x which made it 1066. with the new stuff it is 1066 std on default settings which I cant understand. I have got it to work now and its fast but I can only get it to work on 800 as it crashes and runs slow when set to 1066????

cheers

billy

ill read up on the board as iirc certain things need to be set for it to run 1066 std? not to sure but at least it is workin now wi the 6gb ram lol even if it is at 800mhz n not 1066mhz.

ill keep you posted

Your problem here seems to be that the RAM that only runs at 800MHz was overclocked to 1066, and your mobo is probably trying to equally overclock the new stuff past the 1066 speed.

Me thinks you're best off flogging the other RAM as you might be able to get it to work, but it will be a pain and could cause you stability issues.
