LLU exchange upgrades?

Featured Replies

Anyone know of any sources that can tell if any LLU upgrades are planned for an exchange?

At the moment there arent any, and I'm hoping sky will soon change that so I can get it being a sky customer for the lower rate.

The exchange is EMIRTHL if that helps.

I thought BT used to publish that kind of info.

21CN seems different and still under testing?

Who thinks 21CN will be hopelessly under-specced?

On the samknows page it normally tells you under exchange history if there are any LLU plans for your exchange (so it should really be exchange future)

Samknows is the one I've used before. Don't know of any others.

BT have set a target date of Q3 2009 for the switch to 21CN - whatever that means!

Some info at SamKnows Broadband - Availability - Irthlingborough (EMIRTHL) Exchange

Although no mention of any LLU upgrades

21 Century Networks is the new generation of telephone exchange produced by Chinese manufacturer Huwawie(not sure if thats spelt right).

Benefits are no manual engineering work to enable Broadband, ISDN, Redcare alarms, on yer phone line, it will be a software change only.

Integration with the cable network, in particular Optic Fibre will be used to connect the cabinets (Those green boxes by the side of the road) directly to the telephone exchange therefore shortening current line lengths as Optic fibre has no losses unlike copper cable.

Downside at the moment some kinds of lines have not been designed to work on the 21cn exchange but are being developed as we speak.

Optic Fibre will not be run to each house as a matter of course, the current method of paying for a fibre direct to your home or business will continue for the foreseen future.

21cn is basically virtual exchange. You plug into a hub, and everything can be done remotely almost instantly.

So activating ADSL or a dead line could be done during the phone call. Yeah right... this is BT we're talking about.

Basically cable and mobile firms have been doing this for years ;)

Cable and Mobile firms have only one network to deal with, their own so they are at an advantage. BT has to deal with about 150 Comms. Providers.

In theory yes but The Comms. Provider at present has to instruct BT Wholesale to activate lines & ADSL, therein lies the problem, the delay is caused by communications between The comms provider & BT Wholesale and then further delays between BT Wholesale and Openreach who have to manage the engineers tasks.

The future set up will give the Comms. Providers direct access to the 21CN network to make software changes. This all takes time but when it does work the BT network will be on par with the Mobile operators on speed of delivery.

One other little fact I'd like to point out is-

The Largest Comms. provider is currently Carphone Warehouse not BT.

Wonder what weight they will have with BT.

Also, now they can loose several old brands, wonder when they'll finish the LLU role out program.

I know who would make the most impact too if they went out of business! All of Carphone Warehouses landline business is built on BT infrastructure.

They won't go out off business but could be taken over, as AOL were taken over by CW. I can't recall any CP's actually shutting down, merely being taken over.

What do you mean by losing old brands Gadgetman?

LLU upgrades will take a good few years yet but probably will never be able to accomodate each operater in every exchange, especially the small village exchanges which are about the same size a single garage. Only the cities and large towns will be completely unbundled.

AOL UK, Tiscali, Pipex and all the other brands CW now operate under the talk talk umbrella.

Means only talk talk need LLU in an exchange now rather than 5 different companies ;)

But I cant see all the brands being left to run for much longer.

Global Telecom was unusual to be switching off its. lines but it is a minnow in LLu terms.

The take overs etc. reminds me off the water and Electricity cos. as they are always changing too.

In actual fact there are only 4 LLU companys (I know about) that place their equipt. in unbundled exchanges, CW. Easynet. Tiscali. and BTWholesale, possibly Sky. These networks act as wholesalers to the other CP's.
