Website how not to

Featured Replies

Be internet appear to have hired the 2012 logo designers, a load of kids from the early 90's and fed them all drugs.

What a complete abomination.

The best bit was that they sent an e-mail out saying how the new website was to bring them up to date as their site had not changed but web2.0 and the rest had happened since they started up.

Is it retro?

Good heavens! I saw the email but didn't visit. What was wrong with it before

As Rob says - very retro gamer

Take a CGA game, an early 90's website designed by a kid and you've pretty much got it.

It's only missing a couple of blokes digging, under construction and some blink tags and it's there.

It's awful.

Not very well designed at all.. the colour scheme is awful and actually straigns my eyes just looking at it... I though the key to good web design was to keep it accesible to all users and to not use loud colour schemes etc?!

It is really bad though.. just looks messy to me?!

PMSL. That's nnnasty!

Wow... terrible!

I quite like it. Change the font and get rid of the collapsible blocks and It'd be quite a simple retro look.

Collapsible blocks are the lamest thing to ever happen to the web. Talking of which, does anybody think the current BBC - Homepage site sucks compared to the last iteration.

In fact, thinking about it, I think the web generally looks terrible at the moment. I prefered how things looked 8 years ago. Tag clouds look crap. PHP frameworks and CMSes seem to be making people make quite similar (rubbish) looking sites.

Oh sod it, while I'm going for it, you know what else is crap and I can't wait for them to go away? Facebook and Twitter.

I quite like the BBC site, it's difficult to get a site with loads of info looking clean, but it's a half-decent attempt. Packed but not cluttered IMHO :)

It's got an entirely pointless flash based analogue clock in the top right corner. :)

If we look back at the 2002 version... http://web.archive.org/web/20020124121058/http://www.bbc.co.uk/ (doesn't render perfectly from archive.org but you get the idea)

I think that is so much easier to find information on.

Actually, i love the new bbc website!

I also think its a very exciting time for web design, there are some incredible designs and websites at the moment and it seems there is someone pushing what you didn't think was previously possible all the time. The introduction of javascript libraries like jQuery, moo tools etc have really transformed how we see and use the web.

As for Be, i can see the style they were trying to achieve but missed the mark by a long shot.

Reminds me of an old Teletext page!

I think the BBC page looks a bit too busy and the clock is a bit pointless. The new Yahoo homepage annoys me too... and what do they keep doing to eBay?

Using client side javascript is only good for reducing server loads.

SSI is the proper way of doing these things, but as usual the trendy, we know best web 2.0 people think people say it's a bad idea just because they want to do it.

Client side processing has many issues including the fact that for some reason people trust a client processed reply? If you trust it you can get hacked/stung/whatever much more easily and if you don't trust it you have to validate it so you might as well have done it server side.

Basic 2nd year computing degree stuff really.

If exciting means **** to use and ignoring the wishes of your customers then I'm all up for boring. If that website is still there when my next payment comes out I'll be changing providers.

Ease of navigation seems to have gone as the myspace generation want it to look right but function badly.

Bit like the kev's in their tarted up saxo 1.1. Looks like is should be fast (Well apart from it's a saxo crashed into ripspeed) it has an exhaust that makes it sound like it should be fast (if you are silly enough to believe it) but when it comes to it 99% of them would be seen off by a 1.9D without a turbo charger in 5th.
