Ordering new car and paying final amount

Featured Replies

Hi all, when you order the new car, do you pay the full amount once its delievered and you've seen it? What's the average wait time for it to be built and is there anything else I should know? I've had a new motor before but that was in stock.

Cheers guys.

General rule is pay a deposit, then full amount on collection.

Depending on if the car has to be specially built for you then it can take upto 12 weeks, but can be sooner if it catches the right boats/trains on its way over.

Deposit amout will depend on the dealer and/or car you are ordering. Most dealers will ask for a larger deposit for a high spec car with lots of options.

Pete, what protection against price rises is there when placing a factory order?

As soon as you place the order and it has been accepted by the factory you are protected from any price rises. But there are no planned price rises untill the VAT increase (and its only the vat that is going up as far as we know)

My new motor is a factory order and was told it will be about 10 - 12 weeks. I have ordered with many options and paid £1000 deposit.

I am planning on paying the balance on collection using my debit card but the dealer warned that sometimes customers have waited several hours due to delays with the debit card system.

The dealer has kindly provided me with their bank deatails so i can transfer the money in advance of me collecting the car but I'm not 100% happy about this so I think i will take my chance with the debit card on the day.

Only issue with debits cards we have is that they ofen ask for auth call to the issuing banks, which can take upto 20 mins. Best thing to do is tell your bank a few days before you are going to spend any large amounts of money on debit card.

Last 4 new cars I bought have all been on debit card. No problems nowadays, just phone your bank a couple of days beforehand to get it noted on their computer.

i paid a deposit on mine and got a bankers draft for the rest which i took in on day of collection, but now seeing that debit cards can be taken for the full payment i might next time look at transfering the money to my visa card and pay it with visa (extra protection etc)

I had thought about doing this but i think some places charge 2-3% ish for credit card transactions. Will check with dealer.

Visa Debit gives a fair amount of protection too. More than Maestro etc anyway.

i know i did my deposit with visa and the mastercard i had did some sort of protection too so that did another part of the payment and the rest was bankers draft which iirc cost about £30-40 quid :o certainly would use a credit card again as it does offer you a bit of protection if things start going wrong ;)

Put the initial deposit on your Visa card and then pay with your debit card, thats what I did last week, also phoned up the building soc to warn them, so long as you have enough cleared funds you will be OK. By paying partly on your Visa card they then cover the whole transaction if I am correct. cheers - Stuart.

As others have said before, I paid on my card. It went straight through with no issues. The only thing I would add is make sure you check the car over before signing over the money. I had the dealer try to hurry me through without giving the car a good look over first.

I checked mine very throroughly and also took it for a short test drive before I handed over my hard-earned. The salesman didn't mind (he already knew I was a fussy b@st@rd).

Picked up my V50 on Saturday. I paid £500 deposit by credit card at point of order in mid June and the balance(14400) when I collected the car by Visa Debit after I had inspected the car on Saturday on collection. I thought as a large transaction the bank would have required a phonecall to check security for payment but the whole tranaction was chip and pin.

I have heard on Honest John Hyundai dealers wanted paid 3 to 4 days prior to collection.
