Broken rear springs

Featured Replies

As in the thread below - rattle and split hose - I have been looking for a rattle on my car. This afternoon I started at the rear for a change and found both rear springs broken at the bottom:eek::mad:. No idea when it happened as the broken bit left on one side was rusty and the car seems to drive ok. I removed the leftover bit as don't want to cause a Massa moment for some poor sod, but now what to do? I haven't got time to fix it myself so how much would all 4 30mm lower cost to do as against boggers rears only? Spax and PI seem pretty cheap but anyone know if they are any good? I don't want a hard ride - ooh er missus - but wouldn't mind going round corners a bit less sloppily, so I'm a bit baffled.

Also if this doesn't cure the rattle I'm not looking anymore as its costing me a fortune:eek:

Eibach do a Lowering spring to go with standard shocks. I personnaly use H&R springs as they are heavie and only lower about 15mm

I think I still have my original rear springs since I put the coilovers on.

The paint is off them in places and they are starting to rust but they aren't broken.

You can have them for postage only (to tide you over).

Thanks but I don't think the Vrs ones fit 4x4s do they?

If you get new springs do you need any other parts? I noticed that the rubbery bits above them are falling apart

Good point, I didn't read your avatar.

Are you talking about the bump stops?

You should replace them if they are falling apart but they are only a few quid...

After checking with my insurance:) I decided to go with 30mm lower, but so far haven't found any of the cheaper ones in stock (Spax, PI etc). They are talking 3 weeks:thumbdwn: which is bad news as it means I'll have to drive swmbo's Xsara 1.4 on a trip this weekend:eek: Priced up the originals at the dealers £55.03 + vat for the same ones that lasted 7 years and 61k:( I don't think so. I've never broken a spring on a car before - in 33 years:(

I have one new front spring for a vRS sat in my living room if you want it! Chop it in half and wang it in! Ha

Anyway...... Yeah I hear you about overpriced/snapping Skoda suspension. I actually saved money buying coilovers for £488, rather than buying 4 springs and dampers from Skoda at some insane price. They charged me £75ish for one bloody spring!! Skoda/VW don't seem to grind the ends of their springs flat, which is just plain lazy and cheap. It creates a lovely stress concentration, and eventually the demise of most VW springs.

Get coilovers if you can stretch to them. I've just fitted some due to a snapped spring, and love them. I've only dropped the car 5mm, so it's still comfy yet so much better to drive.

If you're going to get lower springs you might need to change the rear track control arms too. I had H&R springs on my 4x4 and the rear tyres used to wear alot quicker on the inside of the tyre until I got some track control arms from a Golf R32.

Would that apply to 30mm drop? I'd rather it didn't eat anymore tyres - last lot only made about 9k:eek:

I think the H&R's that I had were 40mm lower, but even with a 30mm drop I would think the camber would be out and you can't adjust the rear track control arms. I got my R32 ones from eBay for £50. Not sure what other 4x4 owners have done though.

I guess I'll get them done and see if the tyres start to wear oddly. Should be obvious as they pretty much wear evenly at the moment - just rather quickly. I'll keep an eye out for the R32 bits ta.
