I currently have an 06 Superb elegance 130 BHP and I love it.

I am thinking of the new shape and I am deciding whether to buy a 3.6 V6 or a diesel 170 BHP.

I do about 400 miles a week which costs about £45 a week on the diesel but on the V6 this will increase to about £65.

Is the V6 petrol worth the extra £20 of fuel a week? I would like to hear from the 3.6 V6 drivers.

I dont think we have any 3.6 owners on the forum, partly because the 3.6 is expensive to buy and due to the £400 per year RFL will depreciate like a lead balloon.

If it were my money I'd be going for the diesel, still a fast car, cheaper road tax, cheaper insurance, and cheaper to run in general.

Driven both and I liked the diesel best

We have the Diesel 170BHP.

In terms of performance, I think it is a damn fine car. Huge reserves of power and torque for effortless and very comfortable cruising. If/when you need your car to take off like a scalded cat - just put your foot down and it will do so.

Apart from the cost of fuel, the diesel has other advantages - like better range and lower car tax.

I also understand that depreciation is likely to be a lot lower.

I wouldnt use the term "scalded cat" , the 170 is a nice effortless cruiser but no performance car and i find trying to hustle mine along an unrewarding task so tend just to set the cruise control and potter around.

However there has been the odd occasion when someone has tried something like cutting me up on the inside when I'm turning onto a slip road. When this happens and you floor it in a sensible gear - it seems to leave most everyday cars standing without major problems.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "fast". I don't think any variant of the Superb is the best choice car to buy if you want to whiz everywhere all the time.

have a look at the 1.8TFSi DSG. Petrol ,DSG. average of 35mpg for all round driving and 40mpg on a long run. more refined than the diesel at low speed. plenty of torque due to turbo.

I call the Superb average didnt feel any quicker than the 1.9 Saab 9-3 i had as a loaner the other day but i filled mine up today and with a full tank of fuel you could certainly feel the difference it felt pretty sluggish even, really had to be careful about gear choice

Large torque figues makes the car feel a lot quicker than it is , still i think its the best package in the Superb certainly on paper

We have in fact a couple of 3.6 V6s in the forum as Puppan and I both are driving the V6. You can find further information in other threads.

I really enjoy the 4x4 V6 as it delivers very fast accelerations yet is very silent and comfortable during normal cruise. And the 4x4 is very effective so I never had slip like I had with my previous, less powerful cars.

I also tried the 1.8 TSI and the 2.0 TDI 170 before deciding for the V6. Both of these are very nice engines with lots of torque and power. They both makes more sense than the V6 in economical terms. But they are not fast like the V6!

The torque of the 3.6 is the same as the TDI 170 but at slightly higher rev. But torque alone will not give you acceleration - power will. Power = torque * RPM. At lower revs the TDI 170 is as powerful as the 3.6. In reality the DSG will ensure high revs at full kick-down and thus much more power.

In "D" position the DSG tends to select very low revs (1200-1400) for a petrol engine. At such low rev. the 3.6 is not very powerful. To get more power you have to make a light "kick-down" telling the DSG to select a lower gear. If you make too much "kick-down" it's like firing a rocket. If you are not careful you will go from too little power to too much power. You will soon learn how to control it.

You can also prepare yourself for extra power by selecting "S" or use the "tiptronic".

The petrol capacity is too low, so the range is limited.

If I had to buy the car with my current experience, I would go for the 3.6 V6 again.

If you are looking for good economy or care for global heating, go for a 1.8TSI or a TDI 170.

If you want a powerful engine go for the 3.6 V6.

You mean 1.8 TSI...?

At least here, where the top speed is basically 100 km/h (well, in the summertime there are SOME roads with 120 km/h speed limit...) we don`t need those big and fast cars !

The police just informed us that starting now, about 7 km/h faster that the actual limit will lead to a speeding ticket. So, 1.8 TSI runs about 220 km/h, that`s more than enough for me....:D

Cost aside, you can't beat a big petrol engine. The Superb is a lovely car and with the V6 also very quick. It is interesting though reading back through people's thoughts who tried several engine sizes at dealers, not everyone who tried the V6 rated it better than the less powerful ones.

I have to agree about depreciation, I wonder if the V6 would make a better used purchase rather than new? I don't think it will be a common sight at dealers either.

Before I got my Fabia one of the short listed cars was £400 per year tax and that's crippling really, it effectively would have added £33pm to the running costs.

I think it's brilliant though Skoda have done this, it might not be a "PC" car but it shows they're to be taken seriously.

I for one will be keeping an eye on used V6's! :D

if i was doin that mileage a week i would buy the diesel even if u pay £65 for the petrol to fill the tank u still wont get as many miles out of it. diesel all the way imo

I think you will get sick of filling up all the time in the V6!, more a low mileage sunday drive?

18 TSi DSG = quiet,fast of the mark and cheaper to buy than a 170 CR. (manual thirsty compared to DSG).

2.0 170 CR = (dsg/manual) good fuel economy, excellent overtaking 50mph +.

2.0 140 PD = poor mans 170CR but still very good drive and good overtaking 50mph +.

1.9 105 PD = economical good value car that will get you from A-B lacks power when fully loaded.

We just bought the 3.6 v6. It is not a car that you would buy for fuel economy... but if you like to have an engine that is smooth, can handle your demands with a breeze and if you really like to have a limousine feeling, then the 3.6er is the way to go. Because of it's greater weight it drives like my old Jaguar (which had a 3.6 v6 as well). Only it is quicker and has better specs. We did consider the 1.8, but hearing how hard the engine had to work to get the 1500 kgs in motion, we were seriously doubting our purchase. We did not drive any diesels though, but we do have an Octavia 2.0 diesel at the moment and I can imagine that a diesel in the Superb could be nice as well. Here in Holland there is a certain mileage that you have to drive before a diesel becomes efficient (over 25k a year). Since I have business car (Lexus is250) the Skoda is only used for family and wife's work commute.
