ipod/itunes transfer

Featured Replies

Ok, I need to swap my ipod/itunes library from one laptop to another, how do I do it?

I know if I download itunes to my new laptop and then plug my ipod in it will know its not been synced with it before and IIRC it wipes it.

Help please dear Briskodians

:)

Either:

1) Just copy the library over (by default it is under the My Music folder, I think- just copy the whole Itunes folder), or back it up to discs using the facility in Itunes, restoring it back on to the new one.

Then authorise the new PC through Itunes (You can have 5 PCs authorised).

Start up Itunes and check all your music is there before connecting the Ipod.

Theres a folder named .......I tunes (lol)

In your music folder , copy this then, load it on too the second machine, in the same folder,eg music.

drop in your pod and hey presto no wiping.

Although I don't own a pod, this has worked me on other pods. Albeit a while back on XP

Don't blame me if it goes tits up lol

Others may add too this if they think I've got it wrong :o

If you go to Edit, Preferences and then the Devices tab, you can "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and then copy stuff across manually - I think. But maybe someone else could confirm before you lose everything!

If you copy the library folder to a different location you can point iTunes at this new location by holding down the SHIFT key when you start iTunes.

I think we scared him lol

moved swmbo's stuff off her mums computer to my spare laptop when she moved in. what i did was copy from the music folder the whole itunes folder on to a data key, then plugged it into my laptop and pasted it into music folder, had 99% sucess rate just one maybe two tracks didnt copy over but the other 200+ tracks went over fine, then synced the ipod with the computer.

Thanks everyone, looks like I can do it, just need to get access to my old laptop :)

Is it a touch? or a previous iPod?

If its not a touch, theres a pretty simple way you can actually get the music off the ipod, so you can guarantee not to lose anything...

Is it just me that would have been anal enough to remove the disc and get all of the rust off the outside edge? :D

Is that because the old laptop is bosted?

a computer techy type person could take your whole hard drive out and copy the whole drive over for you ;)

Key thing is to turn auto sync off Ross, before you start moving/copying stuff. This will stop the contents of your iPod being wiped when you connect it to the new PC. You therefore need to plug it into the old PC and your current copy of iTunes first.

Then just install iTunes on the new PC and take the iTunes folder from your old machine onto the new.

i had no problems moving swmbos stuff over from her old computer to the laptop and that was without 3rd party software.
