Vrs jerking when accelerating (just changed Coil)

Featured Replies

I have just been on holiday with my mk1 octavia vrs. The day i got back one of my coil packs went, i replaced it with one off ebay and its still not driving right. Sometimes at low revs when accelerating (normally between 2000&3000rpm) it jurks for a second like its goin on and off the power for a second, seems ok at higher revs and higher gears. Is this something to do with the coil packs/plugs or am i lookin at a turbo fault. Have heard of something to do with the throttle bodys needin cleaned as well???

Does anyone think it could be the pencel coil pack from ebay? it was one of the £20 ones. Am thinkin just to clean my throttle body, but as i live in orkney i cant get the new gasket here. Does anyone know a website for them?

Have you whipped out the plugs and had a look at them yet? You may find they need replacing.

And are you sure you changed the correct coil?

What make was the coil you got from Ebay? I would say to only stick with a Genuine VW/Skoda one as they are usually under £30, or one from a well known OE manufacturer such as Bremi or Beru which will usually cost you £20 to £25.

IMO once one has gone the rest will follow, especially if remapped, I just bought 4 new ones (genuine VW R revision) after I had 2 go in the space of a week, car is a lot smoother for it.

My Fabia vRS does this at 2000 RPM. I've only had the car a few days but I'm going to speak to Simpsons, who I bought the car from, about it. Coil was my 1st thought.

erm, fabia VRS has no sparkplugs thus no coils cos its a diesel!

I think that fabia stutter is well known something to do with a change in the engine for emissions?

N7, i'm having a similar type problem at the moment too. Most noticeable when stopped at a junction and starting to pull away, jerks and bogs down, not too bad but can be anoying. I am trying the throttle body clean first, before i try anything else. I live in Orkney aswell, Stromness. Getting my brother who drives for Macadie & Reeve to pick up a gasket for me from skoda dealer in Inverness as it is directly opposite one of there regular stops, which is handy for me :). The dealer had to order it from south as they didn't stock it, should have it this weekend when my brother gets back, will need good weather then to have a go at throttle body.

mines done 69k so am thinkin its the throttle body. Plugs look good, car seems to be worse when hot. Think am goin to order 4 new coils start of next week. Am struggling to find somewhere to get the throttle body gasket on the internet, anyone know where i can sorce one?????

'mikeyVroom' could taits not even get a gasket for you? I was goin to try there the morn & order Coil packs 2.

Is your vrs alans old one that was at olsons? Red, with remap & decat + blueflame

no m8, its a black one that came from colin greggs, think Ross Donaldson used to own it, very shiny . Re gasket, never bothered to try locally, was just as easy to get my bro to pick one up from inverness, but like i said, even they had to order it in. Im sure taits or factors would probably be able to order one thou. Would be interested to know if new coils solves your problem.

Silly me, just wasn't thinking at the time.

Just a thought .......Have you guys checked your MAF's

Try unplugging them and see if your car runs tidy then.

HTH

04 vRS, same problem..........everyone says Coilpacks, but am not so.

I got a coil pack from ebay but am not happy with it. Car idles fine and sometimes drives ok but if you floor it in any gear it will jerk and go off the power.

I got a Pipercross VIS induction kit that i fitted a few months ago. It wouldnt do anything to make the MAF dirty ? Goin to get new proper Coil packs & new set of plugs & clean the throttle body out in the next week. On the positive side am picking up my White 19" RS4s from the tyre shop so they will be on my car the morns nite :)

Will take some time to get parts to orkney but will update. Had thought it was just the **** coil pack from ebay but have noticed it will only jerk between 2000-3000rpm on the dot ! under is fine & above is fine. No matter what gear your in when you put your foot down on the accelerator and its between 2000-3000rpm it will jerk off the power and if you keep your foot in sometimes the engine management light will flash on and off for about 10seconds.

Hi all !!!!

I too have the same problem with my octavia VRS on a 54 plate, car has done 64k and have only owned it 2 weeks.i put it into the dealers last week for a full service including cam belt change thinking it would solve my splutter but didnt, dealers said my problem was the throttle body after checking my car over twice ! £500 for new one but read a post posted by a user called chicken_eyebrow on here with step by step instruction and pics which were great and have just cleaned it out at the cost of a £4 tin of carb cleaner and a new gasket which was £2 from the dealers but unfourtunatly my car still has that hesitancey at 3000rpm where the power is off,on,off,on .

If i put my foot to the floor from 1 gear to 5 there is no splutter and the car goes like a rocket !!!!!!! only happens when i toodle around and ease the accelerator down at a steady pace.

The dealers also told me that the coil packs would of been picked up on the diognostic machine in the service if they were faulty !!!!!

Hope this is of some use to people and would love to know if anyone solves the splutter and how they did it.

I had 2 coils packs go on my Octavia at around 75,000 mls, but the engine ran no problem before, the coil pack failure was absolute no warning. for peace of mind I replaced the other 2, I notice that the construction of them are different from the old one's.

My 02 reg Octavia VRS has done 77000 miles. Approx 2 months ago I noticed that when ticking over at the traffic lights the revs were flickering up and down. Sometimes it dropped to a point where I thought it would stall and then it suddenly picked up again.

I cleaned the throttle body out following the guide on this website and I've not had a problem since. It took all of 15 minutes, and cost bog all. I would recommend you do this before ever thinking of changing the coil packs.

I originally thought it was the coil packs so I mentioned it to a Skoda mechanic and he said "THEY EITHER WORK OR THEY DON'T, THEY DON'T SOMETIMES WORK, IT'S NOT THE COIL PACKS."

I've only ever had 1 coil pack fail, which I replaced nearly 2 years ago. NONE of the other 3 coil packs have failed. Replacing them all would be expensive and probably pointless.

CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY FIRST!!

Have a look at the throttle body first as mine had the same faults as yours & is now completely cured by cleaning the throttle body & spending about £2 on a gasket!

I have ordered the gasket and am just waitin for it to come home then i will clean it and let you all know how its running

Not to diss BigAceSteve's post but I am not sure the mechanic is 100% correct here. I used to have a VR6 which uses a similar coilpack solution except that the 6 coils all live in the one housing (so when one fails you have to replace the lot, £120!).

My car was fine at low revs and fine at high revs (and even worked okay across the rev range sometimes), but, around 2k when it was hot it would splutter and run badly (especially when I planted my foot). The explanation is that when the coil starts to fail it basically produces a weaker spark (does not necessarily go from 'working fine' to 'not working at all' in one step).

This weak spark was okay for tickover and okay at high revs but something about 2k rpm under load produced the most difficult combustion conditions within the cylinder and this caused it to periodically missfire.

So, lesson of this story is that coils can be weak and may cause missfires under given rpm and load conditions. Just look at the number of people who have to replace their coils after a remap. All that has happened is that the conditions in the cylinders have become a little less conducive to easy ingnition and so the older coils are no longer up to the job.

Just my thoughts,

iep

Cars fixed !!!!!

Got another Coilpack direct from Skoda and swapped it with the £20 one i bought from ebay. Car now seems to be running better. Havent taken it on a long drive to get up to 60mph yet but is driving around town like normal. NEVER BUY THE £20 COIL PACKS FROM EBAY

you don't need to get it to 60 to show up a coil pack, just give it some beans in 2nd and if they are slightly flaky then it will miss fire
