Whining noise when reving?

Featured Replies

Noticed it today when accelerating slowly through 1st and second, a slight whining

noise, rises and drops with engine noise, it may be normal and I've never noticed it

but you know, once you notice it you worry.

It does it when stationary in nuetral when reving the engine as well, best way I can

describe it is similar to the sound of a car reversing at reasonable speed, not as loud

as engine noise and stays 'in tune' with rise and fall of the engine revs??

Any advice greatly appreciated, cheers:)

Mine always had a slight whine like that, didn't get any worse in 30k miles.

Thanks, think I'm just paranoid, probably just not noticed it before:O

Mine does this too - I would'nt worry!

As the whining only happens at low speed it shouldn't be the turbo.

Most likely to be the Auxiliary drive belt, tensioner, or one of the pulleys.

Easy way to rule them in or out is to spray the belt and pulleys with WD40 whilst the engine is idling, if the whining goes then it will be something to do with the Aux. belt and pulleys. Changing the aux belt is a relatively simple job to do.

WD40 doesn't hurt anything in the engine and the effects quickly wear off.

does it do it when you have your foot on the clutch pedal?

my friends seat leon did this. sounded like the thing was supercharged it was that loud.

turned out to be the alternator on its way out

Yes mate, on or off clutch, in or out of gear.

No where near that sort of loudness, only heard it because on a rare occasion I

switched the radio off.

I'll monitor it, if it gets louder I'll get it looked at.

Thanks all :)

Mine has done this since new and it's done 90k now, it's just the gears whining due to the ratios and speeds at the low end of the box.

Probably just torque wind up in the gears.

remember the old mini's or the metro's?

Nout to do with gears if it's doing it with the clutch down. Switch all electrical loads on, if it gets louder, alternator, if not, likely to be aux belt tensioner or aircon pulley noise.

mine makes a similar noise, sounds like a tiny quiet police siren in the engine thats my only description lol. oh and i only heard it when my window was down and radio off. strange tho?

ive just bought a56 reg 1.9 tdi pd with 56 000 on clock and mine does exacyly the same. it sounds like a far distance whirring police siren espically when accelerating in second and third gear.but mine is an octavia

If it's whirring under load Paul then it be the turbo doing it's stuff, nowt to worry about.

Depends how loud really.
