Lost V5 Document - Advice Please

Featured Replies

Hello.

Wondering if any of you can offer some words of wisdom, please.

My friend was given the use of his dad's car and after a while his dad said he can keep it. However it got Cat C'd - his dad got the payout and the car has sat on my friend's drive ever since.

It is likely to get scrapped or sold to someone for bits but the problem is they think the V5 got lost by the insurance company and they can't remember who it was registered to beforehand! I'm not sure either of them wants to go about re-registering it because it's been untaxed without being SORN'd for so long.

So, how do you go about re-registering? Are they likely to get instantly shot for not taxing it? Or can they pass it off to someone else or scrap it without the V5 for the new 'owner' to re-register it?

Thanks for you time, Luke.

Ahhh - so it's likely that the insurance company destroyed the V5 then in light of it being Cat C'd. I didn't realise they would do that. But where does that leave the car though? (except for on a drive!) Do the DVLA automatically stop being worried about it being taxed if the V5 doesn't exist?

the insurance company are a bit thick if they destroyed the paperwork before the car......

What car is it?

It was only a financial write off... although I don't know why that means they can destroy the paperwork!

It's a Ford Probe!
