Not a good time for the PAS to seize up again

Featured Replies

With a trackday tomorrow.

Today the mongrel started the first symptoms of lacking PAS fluid, since the last top-up about 8 months ago. Thankfully I got some at that time, and just topped it up again and all is well. So glad I had some else tomorrow WOULD have been interesting on track!

Long term I need to look into replacing the steering rack but whilst it's using up only 150ml or so in 8 months, I'll keep topping up.

My Rack makes quiet moaning noises sometimes in certain positions, mainly when getting out of a space in the morning (not the normal PAS whirring) more groany then those.... I hit the kerb in winter and needed various bent bits replacing. I didn't think much of it until Ally at U18 said it did sound a little tired..

And now, After reading this, I'll be sure to check the fluid level this weekend.

Does this sound like a Rack on it's way out? And in your experience (if it is) do they keep on going but getting gradually worse?

Good luck with the trackday tomorrow :D

P.S. How much is a rack? D'ya know?

Rack is expensive, but I can probably get an overhaul done somewhere as it's just a weepy seal. When there's fluid in there it performs fine. :) Hence my reluctance to shell out on a new one.

There's a rack advertised on Skospares for £125 plus VAT. It's a TRW not Koyo

I think the labour work is what makes it expensive. I actually have a spare TRW rack here as well.

got a price of £120.75 inc vat & delivery for western powersteering via 247spares

Whats involved in fitting new rack?

The subframe needs dropping, then the odd rack disconnected and removed, then the new one fitted and connected, then tracking, then redo subframe. Could be more to it than that, but thats the basics.

Prices for fitting seem to vary from £150 upwards.

As above. Just a pain in the arrrr5s to fit.
