MPG down after 1st service

Featured Replies

My 08 PD VRS had its 1st service at 18K recently. Just a usual service oil & filter, plus a top-up of aircon fluid.

Prior to the service I removed the Bluefin remap and reinstalled the OEM one from the Bluefin device. After the service I reinstalled the Bluefin. Car appears to be running as per normal but the displayed MPG is down. According to the display Im averaging 38-40 mpg on trips Id previously seen 42-43mpg.

I dont think the dealer did anything to the car except change oil and filters.

Could this be a result of the remap re-install?

Or maybe its something to do with the ECU learning/adjusting - I dunno.

Obviously I'll wait awhile before jumping to conclusions.

Anyone got any suggestions ?

I'd think it's something related to ECU adjustment for remap and for "different" setup, even if this should be better.

Anyway I'd keep an eye on oil engine level. My wife's official Honda garage ALWAYS filled it over max level and I'm not sure it can't be counterproductive for mpg...

And, what about tyre pressure?

Ciao,

ecu has probably been reset after the service, 100-200 miles time you should start seeing your normal figures again.

Cars are filled with longlife 5w/30 oil in the factory. Possible that your dealer used a standard 10W/40 - usually impacts mpg about 3 - 5%

OK I will keep going and watch to see what happens . Thanks

Isn't 38-40 mpg a bit on the low side anyway ?

My girl does 48-52 mpg

Average trip is 30 miles

Mpg starts off around 38 and quickly builds up. Never drive her above 2K revs until shes warmed up.

Would the addition of a chip increase this Mpg further as they should spread the distribution of power over a wider band ?

This happens to me as well. Every time I seviced my car, the MPG goes down. It goes up again 8000 km before next service due.

Have they adjusted the handbrake so it is dragging slightly?

MPG is very driving style and terrain dependant .The mpg I quoted was over my daily 10 mile cross country commute with 15 junctions, some of which require hard acceleration up hill when pulling into lines of commuter traffic. And lets be honest I didnt buy a VRS and remap it to only go and drive like a granny;). So Im happy with my mpg - I can drive fast and still get mpg way better than any similar petrol car.

Incidently the car seems to have sorted itself out and MPGs is back to the usual - so the poor stated MPG seems to have been the result of a ECU reset or something similar.

As I side note, I too just drive gently until its warmed up but I do let the revs go higher and keep the revs above 1500. Very low RPMs when the oil is cold and viscous plus "labouring" the engine is very bad for the big ends as huge pressures are then placed on the bearings compared to revs in the 2000-3000 area and the oil film can then brake down and metal to metal contact occur.

Just to update things. The MPG has come back up to normal now and im getting 48mpg on longer gentler runs and again 43mpg commuting to work.
