Featured Replies

my fabia need's warranty work doing (air con not working correctly) but i don't want to take it to my skoda dealer cause it's too far away and they charge me £10 insurance for a courtesy car.

can vw/Seat dealers do my warranty work ?

thanks

i know they can do the work. (my local vw garage repaired my leon after i crashed it) so could be worth giving them a call

In principle, yes, but in practice you'll likely find they will direct you towards Skoda.

Although all part of the VAG group, each will have their own budgets, costs etc. Basically messy paperwork wise.

You can technically take you car to any garage to do warranty work, as long as they use proper Skoda parts and are VAT Registered. It is normally best practice to use a Skoda dealer, however I cant's see any problems with another VAG dealer doing it as the cars share the same engines etc. The only difference is as metioned above is the price. Audi may charge more for labour or even parts than Skoda.

One problem with having work done outside an official dealer network is that the manufacturer and dealer network automatically refuse any subsequent goodwill claim. This is an unwritten rule across all brands. This will probably apply even if you go to another VAG dealer (i.e. Seat instead of Skoda), even if they tell you otherwise.

This may be important if you have an issue out of warranty.

Seat / Vw / Audi dealers dont have access to official Skoda workshop manuals/procedures

Yes they do. It's all on Etka / Erwin.

Even the general public has access to Erwin.

No they don't.. ETKA is separated into different brands and a fee/license must be paid for each brand. A Skoda dealer won't pay for the licences to the brands it doesn't need on a regular basis/ is certified to sell and carry out repairs on..

Same with ELSA (repair manuals/ current flow diagrams)

Of course a dealer could pay for the things they need on Erwin, but I don't think that is practiced when they have ELSA which is already paid for..

Yes but saying they don't have access "full stop" is a lttle miss-leading JCT600 VW in York defo have access to all 4 common VAG brand . But this is probably because JCT600 group own a franchise of each brand.

I think that you are confusing warranty with servicing, assuming that the OP is asking about the manufacturers warranty and not a third party warranty. A non Skoda authorised workshop will not have any mechanism in place to claim payment for the work, so will not undertake it in the first place.

Though the brands are owned by the same company (VW), they are imported by separate companies within the group.

With regard to the parts, some are unique to Skoda, so a VW dealers parts system will not allow them to order them, that's if they can get the part number in the first place. Even some common parts can't be ordered. For example VW cannot order a front brake piston and seal kit for the Felicia shaped VW Caddy, they have to order the complete caliper, Skoda will supply the kit for less than £20.

If it's under manufacturers warranty, and you need a repair under it, only a Skoda authorised workshop can do it.

For servicing, you don't have to use manufacturers parts, the parts have to be of equivalent quality.

My local VW dealer bluntly refused to do any warranty work on mine :(

Thats because they cant, they have no way to recharge the work to Skoda.

I would not use a Skoda Dealer anymore after I found out mine could not even change the Oil sump bolt correctly. They then charged me to replace the sump after they had rounded the head when it was well in warranty. Makes me think the Warranty is pointless when ya can get the work done a lot better with a lot more care put into it for a lot cheeper money at your locally trustworthy car garage.
