whats the process of a private plate?

Featured Replies

hey all, think i have just found the perfect number plate for me, and its down to £350!!!

anyway when i clicked buy it says theres an 80 DOT transfer fee (whats that??) and the tax, so that brings it to £490, in that price is that including the transfer onto my car, its not a brand new one, also once its on do i have to renew it to the car each year? also when i change cars how much does it cost to reinstate the old reg and put it on the new car??

cheers in advance:thumbup:

Are you getting it from a Broker or the DVLA mate?

The transfer fee is £80 to transfer to a new vehicle, you don't have to renew it as such, only if you park it on retention for an extended period.

If you are looking at a broker, try the DVLA website , my 6 digit plate that the family got me for my 40th birthday was only £250 all in.

Just to add to the above ... if you aren't buying from the DVLA it's worth checking their site to make sure it's still availlable - my private plate's been on the car around 2 months now, I've just checked another site and it's still for sale there.

Yeah as above really, you need to v5, tax disc and retention certificate to transfer the plates which must be done at a dvla office, not a post office ( as some people think :S) and dont forget to tell your insurance they will charge about 12 quid for new documents to be sent out, plus 20 quid for the plates.

just had a look at the same plate on dvla and it works out the same i think, £490 but says nothing about tax and transfer fees, found it originally on newreg.co.uk, wouldnt mind but i looked at this plate before and it was £6,000, this has an X in front of it and its £490! amazing what 1 letter does

USE DVLA!! The price you see is what you pay, plus you have safeguards. Short plats are in more demand, they stand out more therefore they cost more... for example 35CH is on a Audi RS6, if you spend enough time on the DVLA website you will also find bargains... I got two plates then sold one for double what i paid for it. The other one [P13 SST] i kept as i work in a bar lol...

If the plate is on the DVLA site then dont buy it from newreg, as all they do is buy it from the DVLA site like you, stick some markup on it and sell it to you. The DVLA prices are all in and include all the documentation and transfer onto you car with nothing else to pay. You will still need to buy new plates and tell you insurer.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and the 80 quid fee is paid, therefore it if FREE, you only pay to retain the plate if it is not on a car. Once on the car you can forget about it.

NOTE: if you keep it on the form and dont renew it, you loose it after 12 months.

it would be getting put on straight away, so theres no yearly renewal fee once its on, then say when i come to change it to a different car its same process but i gota pay £80

I go to DVLA - Yes

It's £490 and they send me a certificate - Yes

I go to DVLA Office with Tax Disc, MOT, V5 - Yes

And Pay them - No, you've already paid for the transfer in your £490

Then I can put the plates on the car - Yes, but ring your insurance company up there and then

Then Ring Insurance Company - Yes, do it as soon as you've fitted your plates

They Charge me for a new certificate - Yes, unfortunately

Then I have to pay £25 a year renewal - No, once it's on your car there is no yearly charge

The DVLA are easy buy from :)

It's when you want to transfer it to another car that they can drag their feet :(

Yes and no, you don't pay the local DVLA office anything, it's included in the initial fee of £490 for the plate.

You don't need to pay £25 per year for it, it's your plate, you only pay an additional fee if you place it on retention, that is "Park" the plate up for a while as you don't want to put it on a car yet.

You can have the plate withdrawn by the DVLA however, with no refund, if you decide to modify the look of the plate so it reads something different or use illegal font's / spacing etc. Get a friendly officer of the law to pull you and give you a VRN and it's possible you could lose it (not saying that a fine upstanding briskodian like yourself would mess with the lettering).

In summary, pay your £490 and you have nothing to pay again, until you swap it to another car, then at todays rates it's £80...........

On the insurance thing, LV do not charge for a new certificate of insurance, my Mrs is with them and they are pretty good.

although, one thing i forgot to mention, do they give you and updated V5 free then aswell??

When you go to your DVLA office with all your old documents - they give you a complete new set in the new Registration Number.

All that is included in your original fee.

Oh and tranfer fee £80

to take the plate back off and put on retention is £105
