Are these problems sorted with Octavia II?

Featured Replies

Hi -

I'm thinking of buying a 06 octavia for €9500 euros (35K miles) however before doing so I would like to get some advice. My previous octavia suffered from the following problems and I would like to know if the new version of the octavia has resolved these issues?

1) hunting at low revs....due to build up of carbon on throttle housing?

2) gear box issues ( my 00 octavia gear box went after 130K miles) ?

3) locks on boot and doors sometimes not working?

4) rear window cable riser snapped?

I love the new ocatvia II interior but just want to know if the new version of the octavia is subject to these flaws?

Regards,

octojoe

few typo corrections

You've described all the issues my 2000 Octavia had (Apart from hunting at low revs, which I'm not too sure about the meaning of and it was the front diff that failed on mine at 75k). Haven't seen anyone complain about these things on the new model, but a lot of cars tend to have something unforseen go at the 60-80k mile mark, so its only getting to the point where a lot of cars with city mileage are hitting that mileage now I reckon.

Sounds like a very good price for an 06 car too (If that's for Ireland)...

130K isnt bad for a gearbox.

How long do you think it should last?

I would say 150k miles minimum - incidentally this is the stated design life Ford say they use for their cars (Probably for the Mondeo/Focus rather than likes of the Ka). Since VW stuff tends to be a bit more solid and often more expensive, I would say 200k should not be an unreasonable expectation for a minded VAG car (Replacing nothing but filters, timing belts, pads, disks, fluids etc.). Especially since many Japanese cars seem to last that long...

While a design life of 150k miles might be normal, the point is that some will fail earlier adn some much much later.

True :)

Once the repairs cost significantly less than the value of the car mine will stay on the road anyway...

I run a '06 Octavia and I have never had any problems at all. Had a puncture once but that's it. Runs like a dream and works hard for it's living.

My November 2005 Octy 2.0TDI is now on 98,700miles,

Tempting fate here, but service items only so far...

Last week was parked by a Octy taxi driver, he asked how ours was going (55 plate 2.0 dsg Elegance) which i replied ok now teething troubles sorted under warranty from new, he replied he has now done 250,000 miles and only had two clutches go and gaiters etc but no mention of gearbox. You all surprise me saying about low mileage of 150k for gearbox. When i had a transit it had done twice round the clock when the box started giving trouble . So far i have not had a car which has done that mileage though.

Something that will IMHO enhance the chances of an extended life of a gear box is an oil change. While they say sealed for life, the question is how long is life. IMHO it can't hurt to change the oil every 50-75k mile and if you do that life might well be longer than with a dealed system.

Hi Guys,

I agree I think the gear box should have done 150K and more.

Cheers,

octojoe.
