Scroll up, and you'll see ;)

Mr Carefree

yes you are kind of missing something.New European leglisation is tougher on co2 emmissions' date='and the 1.9 lags way behind some other engines, the 2 litre engine in Beemers is a corker, and an example of how the PDs are being left behind.3% tax is a lot for co car drivers

its noisier and more expensive to run,so yes its out of date[/quote']

Mr Elculo

Difference is I dont give a toss about engines in a beamer, or any other car for that matter, i drive a fab vrs so thats the only lump I'm interested in. As for it being noisier, you must the the hearing sensitivity of a dog, because in gear mine's as quiet as any petrol car I've driven...AND its not a company car so again, it doesn't concern me. More expensive to run???.....mine is dirt cheap.

Good day.... :finger:

Who is this Mr Elculo fella, christ!

well Mr Carefree, whether you like it or not,the 1.9TDI is outdated,in terms of running costs, emissions and power, fact

but hey,ive bought one,so i aint that bothered either. But newer and better diesel engines are leaving it behind, but as you say,if you are happy, who cares

well Walkie, who am I? an Octavia RS owner soon to be Fabia vRS owner despite the aging engine,i like the car all the same

He's right you know ;) , better hang on to your Euro III VRS's cos from what I've seen the 2 litre Euro IV version is a lot less economical. Euro IV becomes compulsory in 2005.

(Unless of course you havent been putting the correct spec oil in, in which case palm it off on some unsuspecting bloke before the top end starts to fall apart)

Yeah' date=' surprising!

Still I wouldnt put it past doing it in that, but the average person will probably manage 8-8.5 seconds IMO. Very good figures though, for a diesel :D

Also the test appeared to be for the 2004 version with the shorter gear ratios. Did you notice it seemed to tail off after about 80 or so.... got to 70 in 9.0 seconds but took 23.8 to reach 100.[/quote']

It really is hard to understand where a 23.8 to 100 came from given the 0-60 of 7.2!!! Must be the old diesel bugbear of limited powerband, too many gear changes...

Not surprised the Fab beat the Beezer though the road test beezer had 1000ish on it the fab 6k+. I can feel the difference at 8k.

We all know it's an old engine and quite frankly couldn't care less. The point is that it's still being rolled out today with many manufacturers putting their trust in it.

Concorde

The Space Shuttle

Harrier Jump Jets

The mechanics that drive Big Ben

My Auntie Noreens Cuckoo Clock

ALL old, but all damn fine

Have fun with your new vRS, despite your reservations about its engine being developed by cavemen :D

Mr Elculo, i ask as it seems you are on the deffence for no reason whatsoever! :)

Well the 2.0 TDI has *marginally* more power than a PD130, allegedly anyway, but it actually appears to be slower. Looking at Autocar test results, an Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport is slower than a Mk4 VW Golf PD130 by a fair margin, so forgive me for not being too disappointed about having the PD130 over the TDI ;)

I think some of you are missing the point. If you've read the Autocar article you'll know that they found it a damned fine car. Fast, economical and great value for money!

Well said that man!

Regardless of "new technology" or not, t'was a step in the right direction.

Which after all is all I am saying. Good car, good engine, good reputation, good reliability, good mpg, good performance

AND

Good day....

...exactly! what other car offers 50mpg, 7.2secs to 60mph, can outrun a Beemer 330 in-gear acceleration (quote Autocar) and only cost eleven grand brand new? (from Tins.co.uk)

I rest my case! :)

Yes BUT Skidude the engines our our fabs date back to the dinosaurs, are really loud and aren't fit to power lawnmowers

Yeah, I hate the noise and vibration from my Flymo 1900 PD TDi, but I get plenty of lawns to the gallon and it can hack through the deepest grass! ;)

To be fair, the 0-60 time of 7.2 was a bit of a freak. As the artical said it was getting a consistant time of 8.2 which ties in with the 0-60 times of the 130pd Golf and Ibiza when they where tested.

It may have been a bit of a freak, but it still happenned. Agree though, the average person is more likely to get 8-8.5, but thats still not bad for a diesel.

Both the Ibiza and Fabia are bound to be quicker than the Golf though, and for under

New does not necessarily mean better overall. They improve things for environmental reasons, which is good but in doing so remove some of the fun factor. From what I read the 140PD has a smoother power delivery than the 130PD but it has lost some of that surge and does less mpg. Fare enough on the company car tax issue, but most owners will be private anyway so I

The real world 0-60 times are all pretty acedemic - its the in gear acceleration times that really count. I remember years ago Top Gear (TV) invited a load of hot hatch owners (Astra GTE, Golf GTi etc) along with their own cars to try the 0-60 thing.

The thought of side stepping the clutch at 5000 rpm was physically impossible for most of the owners to carry out and their times were 2 or 3 seconds town on what the professional testers could do in someone elses car!

Does the present PD130 do what we want it to do in the Furby vRS - yes. Enough said. Sod's law says there may well be something 'better' (read more modern) along just after you've bought something but that doesn't dtract from the current car's capabilities. We've all given up caring that next week our computer, telephone, microwave etc will have been superceeded. Live for what we have now - and I haven't even got mine yet....!

Euro IV emissions regs look like a bit of a nightmare. The diesels will have to be set up to occasionally burn all the soot out of the catalytic converter, so they'll use more fuel. What's more, they can only do this above a certain speed/fuel input, so if you potter about for long enough (about a tankful of fuel's worth) you'll start to choke up your engine.

That means less power, and more fuel consumption. At some point, someone's going to have to point out to hippies that cars already pollute less than most public transport. I guess the plan is to keep worsening cars until public transport looks attractive: can't see it happening any time soon, mind! I'd rather walk than sit on a bus with the plebs, mentalists and losers.
