warning light

Featured Replies

we have a 1999 skoda 2.0litre octavia and a warning light has come on but not in the usual block of warning lights, this one has come on the rev counter(slightly inside the 5000 revs mark)it is like a crooked arrow above what looks like a brake servo but could be anything.

does anyone know what it it as it is not in the handbook and it says to check but dont know what to check.

yours hopefully.

Generic engine management light? Post a picture of it and I am sure someone will confirm what it is. I have never actually seen the warning light on mine!

I can't find any reference to anything other than the rear fog light warning, or the EPC (petrol only, and nothing like the description) in the manual, or on my dashboard (2002 TDi Elegance, no multi-function display).

took it to dealers and it is the engine management light.they want £35 +vat to put it on computer to see what fault is, is this reasonable and does it have to be done at main dealers.

£40.25 for 5 minutes work - enough said?

You can buy a code reader for less than that, or go over to the VAG-Com forum, and check the site map to see if there's someone near you who'll check codes for free, or a couple of beer tokens.

rang our mechanic who says he can read the fault on whatever computer he has(something like vagcom he says)£25 plus vat will refund money if no fault is shown and needs resetting or money refunded if work done.cars seem to technical now.

do you think this will be ok or am i better off taking to dealers.

our garage is in the good garage scheme and has always been fair

This is an annoying way garages are getting a bit of extra income in now! My usual garage doesn't charge, but is 37 miles away! (74 mile round trip just to get checked). The local one said they wouldn't charge me last time, but each time I take it down for the engine light it costs me £100's anyway!

I would say it depends on how your car is running on whether to get it checked or not. I always worry about mine when the light is on - last time it was the thermostat and it didn't behave much differently, but it could have been worse if I hadn't got it fixed!

Which reminds me some faults can be cleared (say by replacing a part) but the EPC (or whatever) light remains lit until the fault is deleted from the ECU memory.
