Charging isues? Alternator DMF wire snapped?

Featured Replies

Hey there,

I think my car (53 reg 1.4 TDI Polo) may be suffering from the common broken DMF wire problem. Ever since I bought the car (nearly 2 years ago), I've never seen the battery warning lamp light up when I turn the ignition on.

The first hint came to me last year during it's MOT, when they said the alternator may have an issue as it was only putting out ~11.8v at the time. I've been reading around and my car shows all the symptoms when I checked it out recently: Immediately after starting the car, the battery read 12.6v...blip the throttle to ~3k RPM and come out and check again and voila, 14.2v at tickover. I take it this indicates that the said wire is snapped?

There's a connector on the alternator with 2 wires, one red and one blue. I take it it's this blue wire which has probably snapped of at the connector in front of the gearbox? Do you know the part number for this connector, or is there a better way of fixing the problem? And this is a question that'll have you laughing (showing my inexperience :o), upon jacking the car, I take it removing the undertray is a straightforward process which should take a couple of minutes at most? Is the said wire/connector obvious to find once the undertray has been removed?

Sorry for the essay, but any help would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Ash :)

Hi ash. I think I know what you mean. One of the awesome lads posted a fix on scn I think with pics. Might be worth a look.

Undertray is easy. It's held on by screws.
