Mk2 Golf GTI 16v !!!!!

Featured Replies

Gary (Oilburninnut) is desperate for me to make a build thread, so here it is!

After looking around for a cheap mk2 just for a run around for a bit, I ended up buying the one Gary bought only 3 days earlier!

Here are pictures of how I acquired it!

Since owning it, myself and Gary (mainly Gary) did / had the work done to get it through it's mot.

So now it has it's 12 month ticket!

Ran it on the rolling road with a low oil pressure warning light (thinking it was just a ****y sensor)

Got 134.65 bhp at the fly, 109.5 at the wheels redface.gif (wtf) and 100.38ft/lb (also wtf)

Aaaaaany way, after 170 miles of driving with the low oil pressure light, it spat it's dummy oil and produced me with the noisiest car I've ever heard... This is what I ended up with!

So... I needed a new bottom end :D

I was offered a bare bottom end (including crank, conrods and bearings, oil pump and sump and pistons)

I went to collect and it was mine for £30 :D

Gary and myself got together yesterday and assessed the situation and started the process of changing the bottom end, I didnt get too many pictures but this is the gist of it :D

Front bumper off (along with rad and crash bar no pics though of these 2)

Get it into the garage and label cables as Gary took off air intake manifold, exhast manifold and engine/gearbox mounts.

My idea of marking/labeling (take pictures!):

And you get the idea...

Just as we finished this my block and tackle arived!!!!! Sweeeeet timing!

So got that up and engine out before a dinner break! We adhered to all Health and safety requirements as you can see.......

So heres the new bottom end with the sump removed:

So next step, remove all ancilliaries off the old block, along with cylinder head and gear box and stick em on the new bottom end! Easy! ......

Little did we realise what a pain in the backside it was transfering them all!

We managed to get all the ancilliaries off the old bottom end and get them on the new one including the gearbox:

New rebuilt bottom with gearbox:

Only problem was we couldnt get the head off the bottom end! We got bloody spline sockets but there was one we couldn't reach so we had to stop there :(

Raped old bottom end:

So now all we are left to do is fit a new cam belt kit, new head gasket set and a good old clean and we should be up and running :D (Oh and also a new N/S driveshaft!)

Oh and just another little change, the downgraded CL interior (god knows why someone would do that) was taken out and replaced with GTI interior :)

hurry up and get the gaskets so we can get her running again:D

And gary was so confident in his mechanical abilities he turned up in his wifes car ( he's broken his.....)

( Only joking, it's just a shame Luke is too tight to buy any gaskets.)

Even if I had bought the gaskets we wouldn't have been able to get the head off to fit the gaskets! haha
