Help please before i set about the heap of junk with a hammer, my fabia has started to use oil at an alarming rate 4L in less than 2000miles, the car recently had throtle body/housing changed and the ERG adapted plus a service. During the service they filled it up with a fully synthetic 5w/40 engine oil:rolleyes:....its booked in next tuesday for investigation to oil consumption..more cash no doubt:thumbdwn:

Hi,

As I mentioned in your welcome thread, it's pretty likely to be the piston rings - a garage will be able to confirm, but it's not going to be cheap if it is that. I'm guessing you can't see any signs of a leak underneath the car? Can you get someone to drive behind you / watch you as you drive past, and tell you if you're leaving a trail of blue smoke when you put your foot down?

No signs of oil leaks anywhere underneath the car or on my garage floor and no signs on blue smoke upon acceleration. Any ideas of cost of Piston ring replacements at a main dealer:eek:

Sit down when you ring them!

To be fair, Autodata reckons 4.6 hours for remove and install. The parts themselves shouldn't be too expensive (just some bent bits of metal and new bolts, after all) so it doesn't look like it'd be the kind of bill that would make it only worth trading the car in - GBP300 at a specialist, perhaps?

I was quoted £485 for the piston rings on my old 1.4 16v

Is it the sort of job that could be attempted at home (have access to a resonalby skilled mechanic)?

Mine is doing the same thing, and was wondering if it could be possible if it could be the valve seatings, and maybe the OP's too, ask it smokes on the overrun as much as under power.

If it was the valve seatings, could that be done at home as well?

None of the engine overhaul jobs get more than three spanners in Haynes, but the instructions are for a full overhaul, which is presumably a multi-day job. I'm sure with a bit of thought you could separate out the relevant bits, though. Looks like having the right tools is a bigger deal than what you do with them...

Totally forgot to look in the Haynes. Wonder how much use it will be being a modern one though.

Result, both dealer and Skoda uk are going to contribute to the cost of replacing piston rings and other parts leaving me with about £300 to pay lol
