Good news! They've agreed to give me a credit (of $999) for my Olympus so I'm looking at what to get in the same sort of price range. Choices are:

Canon SX10is

Panasonic FZ28

Fuji S200EXR ?

Sony DSC-H20

Other options are:

Sony DSC-HX1 - tempting but an extra $300

Or the really expensive option for another $400

Canon EOS1000D digital SLR black twin lens kit

Help!!

Edit: or, buy SWMBO a compact camera with the credit and get a Sony Alpha 200 with 4Gb card + basic lens and spare battery for $850 (last one in stock special :P)

I'm sure Brimmer will be a long shortly to recommend the Panny :D

Further thoughts

I think it comes down to:

Canon SX10is or

Panasonic FZ28

OR

Canon EOS1000D digital SLR black twin lens kit or

Sony Alpha 200 with 4Gb card + basic lens and spare battery for $850 (last one in stock special )

So the question is compact size and portability compared to image quality and speed.

The HX1 is still tempting despite the price - mainly because of its cool features - the sweep panorama mode and the low light thingy where it takes 10 shots and combines to reduce noise.

Here I am !

And yes, I really am that predictable

PANNY Z28

I'll be boring everyone posting up some holiday snaps shortly, Rob, so you can see what it can do :o

Tasty!

Z28 ;)

When you pick a FZ28 up it feels like a toy - it must be 60% of the weight and volume of my previous Fuji s602. The weight saving partially due to the lithium ion battery, which, I kid you not, on a recent outing to Chester Zoo accounted for 1050 shots (Panasonic rate it for 460) and it was turned on for some 30 minutes or more between shots. Most of the shots were at full 10MP, some 200 at the 3MP 7fps and there were two 1 minute HD videos taken - and then I bottled out and put in the spare battery.

I've taken 1,000s of shots and the vast majority have been good. OK it's not a Scuff-machine but for all round versatility, ruggedness I can quite easily concur with all the reviews which consistently place it top or equal top.

And, should you wish, you can get a Panasonic adapter for around £24, together with a Olympus TCON 17 1.7x teleconverter (identical to the Panasonic teleconverter) this will take you up to 30x zoom at full resolution and up to dizzying heights if you use smaller resolutions. I ebayed one for £55 sh and it has been superb.

Now, if only I could get wifey to let me have the FZ38 ;)

Why oh why haven't they added a tilting screen to it - that would have turned it into pretty much perfection IMHO. That is the only feature I miss from the Canon S3iS I used a while ago.

They haven't gone quite far enough to make it a justifiable upgrade from the Z28.

After much pondering the Canon DSLR is looking most tempting. SWMBO won't approve :)

Look, leave him alone ;)

If he really really wants to spend a fortune on image stabilised lenses AND have to lug em around with him then it's his choice. Erm, well, Mel's choice :D

I toyed with the idea of DSLR last time, bought the Olympus and I was disappointed with the image quality, and of course the colour though that might be a faulty unit.

I'm going to the shop at lunchtime to play with the FZ28 and the Canon.

See how it goes.
