replaced the black plastic surround on the fog lights (vRS) with a tight black mesh? but kept the painted bit?

I always look at these and find all the un-painted plastic bits a bit overkill.

Would maybe look a bit more like this?

On the drivers side it would allow more air to the SMIC, But on the passenger side it would open the horns to the worst or the elements, And i think you'd then be able to see the bottom of the washer bottle too.

Trouble is, the bits you're talking about are all one part AFAICS so you'd be doing a lot of cutting. In a lot of cases, on closer inspection, you'll find the 'mesh' is just a moulded pattern on what's a solid piece of plastic anyway, as unnecessary openings kill performance.

You won't get much more air into the IC, as there's a rubber funnel behind the plastic bit, and like has been said, you'll be able to see an awful lot of "what's going on" behind the bumper, which won't be terribly attractive...
