In the course of a normal dealer service would they remove my wheels. For example to check the brakes?

No need on a VRS as it's discs back and front. All pads can be checked with wheels in situ. They might remove the wheels if the discs look worn, to measure the rotor thickness.

It’s not very exciting really.

Had a puncture on Saturday morning and could only get 3 of the 5 wheel nuts undone. 1 wouldn’t budge, and the other ended up getting all chewed up.

“Rescue” was dispatched by Green Flag, and the guy they sent also struggled to undo them with a 3ft wrench. He said there was “no way” I’d have done it with the one provided with the car – fair enough, they’d obviously been machine tightened. He also commented that the wheel hadn’t been off for some time which I thought was odd given it was serviced on the Wednesday.

Not that odd though apparently.

Edit: And to top it all I stood on and snapped the little plastic set of tweezers for getting the plastic caps off the wheel bolts. Anyone got a spare?

Mine seem too self tighten lol

My mate always used too go on about VW's self tighteners as well.

I bought a draper telesocpic wheel brace and left it in the boot as the standard one is a bit pooh.

I'll be investing in a telescopic brace of some description........ My old man used to have a thick length of pipe that just slipped over the standard brace. May be a chaper solution.

A cut down scaffolding pole always worked for me.

Make sure you secure it well in the car though as you don't want it flying about in a prang.

If it's anything like my car the bolts/wheels do corrode slightly and it can make it difficult if the wheels haven't been off for a while, even assuming they haven't been over-torqued.

Always make sure they remove and copper slip them. Otherwise you'll have a pain at the roadside.
