Coming Home/Leave Home and Xenon Lights

Featured Replies

Hi all, asked my dealer to set this up recently when I had the car in for a service. They are a friendly bunch and have previously change settings for me no prob. However this time around they tried this and couldnt get it to work, the tech reckoned it was due to the fact that xenon's draw a big current and that Ch/LH could not be enabled as it would drain the battery...what about cars which left the factory with these options???? Sounds like rubish to me....

Xenon initial startup is pretty high as they require a lot of voltage to get them going but once on draw significantly less current (a 35w Xenon is the same as 55w halogen)

HI AMB_1, my L&K xenons work with that function. If I unlock the doors when its dark the xenons fire up and same when turning the ignition off, they stay on for the aloted time then turn off. Settings via Maxidot.

I've got this and turned it off with Maxidot. Pretty pointless for me.

You need the light sensor for it to work IIRC.

You can program it on cars without a light sensor.

It's b0ll0x about the Xenon current draw, how does a car with autolights and Xenons manage?

Perfectly until I turned it off!

Sooo... if you clicked to unlock in broad daylight, your headlights came on?

With the light sensor, they only come on between dusk & dawn.

That's what I said, I was answering the question...

Right... we're at crossed purposes, you have a light sensor then? So how come your lights came on in the daylight when you clicked to unlock?

They didn't. They only came on at night due to the light sensor. I switched off the function as it lights someones front room up when I turn the car off, and some road I wasn't walking on when getting in. That's what I meant about them working perfectly, but it's a useless function for me.

carl set this up on mine , its good in winter but a bit pointless in the daylight.

i dont have a light sensor or anything else for that matter, teach me to buy the car then join brisky

I have this set for 'leaving home' and I personally find it useful. I probably wouldn't enable it if I had xenons though as the ballasts don't particularly like being fired up, then turned off after 10s. It's going to shorten their life.

Exactly what I was going to say - don't turn xenons on and off unnecessarily unless you want to be paying to replace them far sooner than you'd like to.

I was thinking about that yesterday - a Nissan Pathfinder with Xenons and auto headlights was behind me and the lights were turning on and off under the shadow of bridges!

My VRs has factory Xenons with coming home and leaving home function.

Work fine with no issues.

Had this function on RS4 with BiXenons and also never had a problem. Never replaced a ballast pack on anything either.

It's like anything, if you sit there switching them on and off, you're gonna blow something.

i have ch/lh enabled on my car with vagcom i have no light sensor, the lights come on in daylight (cos of no light sensor) but is only set for about 20 seconds. i have no problems with this and is very useful at night in a dark car park or to light the drive up when i get home. but then i have DRL enabled on the xenons too which i feel is safer to drive. Ok you probably loose a couple mpg for this feature, but its one im happy to loose for it.

Highly unlikely it is a couple of mpg more likely couple hundreths of a mpg.

My dad had a Volvo XC90 with DRL and asked at the Volvo garage when in for a service if they had ever worked out if it would make a difference to economy. The reply was "it was so little they actually had trouble detecting it from all the other assemblies that take power from the engine i.e. air con"

I have factory Xenons, and they worked fine with the coming/leaving home option, but I switched it off (with maxidot) as I didn't want the Xenons turning on and off uneccessarily.

My Golf does that too, in fact its become far more noticeable, bridges & long stretches under trees, since a firmware update.

It doesn't really bother me.

Thanks all, as I suspected the excuse for the tech not being able to set it up was crap...as pointed out numerous cars on the market have xenon's and CH/LH. I would like to have the feature enabled at least and that way if I dont like it at least it can be switched on/off via Maxidot. Other car we have (a Disco 3) has this feature and its handy for dark winter nights....I guess im just going to have to track some one down local with VagCom!

Someone with VCDS should be able to enable it for you :)

AFAIK once you have the feature enabled, you won't be able to control it from within Maxidot as the feature doesn't exist (within your Maxidot options) to begin with. You'd need it coding back out again if you don't like it.

Interesting....I was under the impression that any new option enabled via VCDS would then be displayed on maxidot as if the option was there from the factory e.g. OEM bluetooth, MFD3 sat nav....can any one whom has enabled CH/LH on a car which didnt have this as a factory option confirm if they had control via maxidot after the feature was coded on the car??

But if you have the light sensor, then not an issue with Xenons as they'll stay on whilst you start the car.

In fact, IIRC you're more likely to blow a halogen bulb than damage the xenons.

Once it's enabled in VCDS, the menu for it appears in Maxidot. So from the on you can enable/disable and alter the length of time the lights stay on
