Intermediate exhaust muffler

Featured Replies

Not sure I have the correct english word for it, but I'm talking about the bigger round part on the exhaust that's just before the "final" bigger muffler, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The question is: can I/is it worth taking off? I'm going to have some exhaust work done next week prolly, since I have a small leak after the CAT plus the holding ring or whatever it's called at about the middle of the exhaust/car is broken and when I go over bumps the whole exhaust kind of jumps around a bit. These both will be welded. So I was thinking that since I'm doing that I might as well take off that intermediate muffler to kind of lessen the air restriction going out and just replace it with a bit of straight pipe.

What do you guys think about it? Worth doing? Can I break anything? :D

Several of the after market exhausts don't have a centre silencer so you should be fine. Of course it will make more noise!

You seem to have quite a high spec engine, why not just buy a performance exhaust system?

'Cause I lack the finances :)

Second reason: 'cause I'd probably have to buy the complete thing, starting from the downpipe and...I lack the finances :D

That's exactly the right word for it.

As to whether it's worth replacing it with straight pipe, it will depend on where the main restriction in the system is. I'd usually expect it to be the cat, and possibly the intercooler if that's standard.

Ok, I made an appointment for next Monday. I'll probably take it off then. I wouldn't mind a louder exhaust, currently it's uber-quiet, at times I wonder if I'm not driving a 1.6i lol :D
