To buy....or not to buy....Golf Gti 25th Anniversary

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive always had a soft spot for these Golf's, however even after doing a bit of searching around, I still can't find that much information on them with regard to what to look out for when buying.

There are a few for sale, and seem to be asking quite a premium for this 'special edition'. I would like one in black, diesel with around 40-60k on the clock.

Do any of you guys know much about these cars? And would I be dissapointed if I sold my Fabia vRS for one?

Heres one Ive seen, bit high on mileage - but looks a nice car; Volkswagen : **Golf 25th Anniversary TDI - LIMITED EDITION - Bl

Good to hear any opinions,

Si.

Same as any other Golf, but it's got a bodykit, and 18" BBS alloys, and 180bhp :)

I think you'd be very happy, albeit not with the comparative economy.

Im looking at the diesel version of this car, as they did the 1.8T 180bhp, and the PD150.

I liked the alloys on this edition, but thought the bodykit looked a bit aftermarket. If you're really after a MKIV I'd be tempted to get a well sorted standard one and spend the premium you've saved on go faster tweaks :)

bit on the steep side for a mk4 even with teh stupid high millage ad rather go for a mk5, or chip your vrs would be a cheaper sollution. But truthfully the mk5 is the way forward. Were I live chavs are finding seats in these cars, all engines. 1.6 / 1.8T / 1.9Tdi and it really is doing nothing for there image.

I had the same (150) engine in a Bora and it was splendid but a bit smokey. Much much quicker than the later 140.

Any help ??

The BBS Wheels. Loads of them were replaced under warranty due to corrossion etc durin winter months. Just make sure they aren't kerbed and they should be okay.

My bro has the diesel version and he loves it - as stated above the BBS rims can get a bit scabby if not cared for.

Cheers Guys, I will take these points into consideration. The camshaft is the one that worries me the most, as there is no way of knowing when one is likely to go. Or is there?

I will have a serious think as to whether its worth getting rid of the Fabia to get the Golf, as it does everything so well!

Unless is missing on idle etc, the only way to tell is to pop the rocker cover and have a look but sellers aren't going to let you do this.

I had a look at mine at the weekend and mine will fail in the next 6 months, joy! As the 150's get older this is becoming more common, VW have revised the followers , the old ones were silver the new parts are black. You might get a goodwill gesture if it fails and the car has full VAG history.
