Tomtom versions & upgrades

Featured Replies

Hello :D

My tomtom (go 700) runs on version 6 (I think it is 6.52) and I would like to upgrade it, I have been "playing" recently with version 8.35 maps but the tomtom is not recognising the new maps, despite the trickery involved in trying to get it working. Now wondering if perhaps the operating system needs updating as well? It simply does not see the folder with the maps in it, once copied over to the hard drive, and as far as I can tell everything is needed to make it work, which is why I'm thinking the version might be a factor.

This whole tomtom / PDA thing goes way over my head to be honest and although the maps on it now (Western Europe & Eastern Europe) are fine for general motoring, they are now about 2 years out of date and it would be nice to get the most current ones.

Buy an iPhone Jason, Jailbreak it and stick the new TomTom app on that has been freshly downloaded from demonoid. I am relibly informed that it works beautifully :)

TomTom did release a couple of "OS" updates for the GO range, I remember applying them to my 940 when I had that.

No way can I afford to get an iphone - may as well buy a brand new tomtom :D

Just wondered if I need to upgrade my operating system to 8.35 before using these maps? The only thing then is my version 6 maps probably won't work then, although I could always make a backup on my PC just in case.

Personally I'd retire the 700, it's old now & the newer devices are far more sensitive & accurate.

If you want to try the new maps then you need to update the 700's firmware or navicore via TomTom Home, it may or may not work. However I don't think that the IQ routing facility will work on the 700 as it's now too old.

Can I ask you do you travel to Europe at all?

If the answer is Yes! Then get the Tom Tom 730, you could go for the 740 Live, but unless you're willing to pay a £8 pcm subscription, then it's not really worth it.

If you only do the UK/ROI then get the Tom Tom 530 or you could go for the 540 Live, but again unless you're willing to pay a £8 pcm subscription, then it's not really worth it.

There are the XL IQ versions of the above, however they do NOT have any SD memory card expansion slots, so you cannot expand the capabilities of the system, it also makes adding POI's more difficult.

I would recommend that you don't buy the Tom Tom Speed (Oops! Safety Cameras) thing, it's regularly out of date, you'd be far better off buying a £20 pa subscription from pocketgpsworld.com, which will give you access to at least bi-weekly updates to the camera network.

Download Tom Tom Home, connect your unit to the PC, and see if it needs updating. It'll soon tell you if a new version is available.

My trusty Go 510 is still supported and works perfectly well. Just back everything up before you upgrade.

You need to have the New operating system in

I assumed from your PM's you did

Load up TomTom home plug in the device and it will update automatically if one is available. ( as said above by Philc)

My Go (Vintage 2004, cost £380 even after staff discount) still does more than enough and has the latest maps on it. As mentioned it's just plugged into TomTRom home and updated every so often

And say if someone had said version of tomtom and a 'broked piephone.. how would one go about installing

Well, assuming one is using Cydia and not Icy then one would apparantly need to do the following

Add the following as a package source to cydia

Welcome to Cydia.hackulo.us!

Then, from that source, download and install Appsync for OS 3.0

This allows you to sync apps to the piephone through Itunes that have not arrived via the app store (nudge nudge, wink wink)

Head over to your favourite torrent site

Download any iphone app you like, there are lots of TomTom's out there, I have seen the western europe one running very very recently (which includes UK and full postcode search)

Once downloaded, double click the .app file it will then appear in your iTunes apps section

Sync the iphone and you are done

Simples........

cheers fluff.... i guess people who get this app will be wishing they got the 32gb piephone now :o

Well, it's getting daft, since doing this I now have 2.5GB Music, 3GB Movies, 7GB Apps on my 16GB :) In my evaluation processes I have actually found co-pilot to be better than TomTom so far :)

I just need someone to develop a waterproof cover and I have my emergency bike satnav sorted

I do have tomtom home, but I think last time I hooked it up it said something about "no account" and didn't do anything. My GO 700 isn't assigned to me or the last owner I believe, which might be why,

Have a feeling it needs to be done the old fashioned way. ;)

You might need to register with TomTom, but it's no big deal. And I'm not sure there is an old fashioned way any more.

Indeed, it's just a case of downloading the latest version of home, create an account, then plug in your current TT and it will tell you what's avaialble. It does not cost anything to create an account Jason and that should sort you out :)

Will try that.

To be honest, the current maps work fine and took me to Prague once, Ring once, etc etc, Just would be nice to have all those new roads built in the database.

Jason, download

Tomtom Home, Version 2.7 and plug it in. The 700 should then update from 6.xx to 7.9.x (which I believe is the correct version) and this version will support the Version 7 and 8 maps. I updated our antique GO 910 a couple of week ago, and it works perfectly with the new maps.

Do you have all the lane guidance and IQ routes with that version of Navcore?

My 910 is running an "interesting" version of Navcore 8.xx and gives me the lane guidance etc. Only downside is the remote no longer works, but that is no big loss.

No sadly, I think that as you say needs Navcore 8 and a map that supports those functions

I forgot to update this, but I got it all working with updated maps. God bless the internet. Now running version 7.9__ something and version 8.27 map of western & central europe, which saves me having separate maps for western & eastern. Very chuffed.

I don't Rate TomTom at all.

Had it on a PDA and it never got updated once, and only last year i replaced it with a TomTom one UK/Ireland and had the traffic update RDS thingamie bob.

When i was lucky enough to get any map updates it would kindly wipe all of my POI's and favourites for me.

When i used the traffic updates i found it would often update AFTER i'd hit traffic, and try to get me off the next road (normally the traffic had cleared by the time you reach it).

Have also found it taking me off a motorway, heading over several small roundabouts on the way to wolverhampton, and then it turned me around and sent me back the same way i'd come and onto the motorway at the same junction i'd got off!!!

When i bought my Sony ericsson C905 it came with Carphone warehouse Navigator on it, and you get a full version for a trial.

I used the Phone and the TomTom side by side on the same journey, and found that the phone was MUCH MUCH better.

It updated traffic 3 or 4 times, and guided me around delays, avoided Motorways for the entire journey, and arrived 45 mins faster than the TomTom suggested route would have managed.

TomTom wanted to take me down motorways for the entire journey (M54/M6/M40/M42) meaning i would have found myself in at least one jam. It never once updated the traffic despite my manual updates when the phone alerted me to traffic delays.

I sold the TomTom a couple of days later, and now use my phone for navigation everywhere.

TomTom will have to make some huge improvements to tempt me away from my mobile.

Your C905 hasn't broken yet....??

Please don't curse me

So far i've not had a single problem. I've had 2 firmware updates, and apart from the Sat Nav resetting to the trial version, and having to dig out my email with the activation code in, its been 100% reliable. Owned it since April.
