PS3 V3.0 Firmware

Featured Replies

Out today, the new spangly V3.0 firmware with added iplayer support (finally). the new menus look very similar but with added slickness, and sparkly fairy dust effect on the home screen. The new PS3 logo is present, but most importantly, iplayer now works without any messing about with half ar5ed cobbled together websites. Just open the web browser and go to BBC iplayer and Bob's yer uncle.

The quality isn't as high as HQ you can get on the internets, you can tell it's an internet stream, but the sound is very good, and it looks better on a big telly than on a PC monitor.

Cheers Roy !!!

You don't even need to do that. There's a new TV section on the XMB which has iPlayer

Good skillz! :D

Will have a peek later.

Steve

Well it's on

Where's this TV bit then? Can't see it at the moment....

I can't find the TV section either. maybe its just in the slim jim PS3?

No I have a 60gb PS3

I've got the TV shortcut, one of the main items on the XMB next to Video. The iPlayer page is pitifully small though!

I've just checked again, and it's there now! I'm sure it wasn't there before. Maybe a reeboot was needed. In the small screen there should be a clickable banner saying "play in full screen" or if you're already playing the content, then there is a little button to the bottom right of the small screen that expands it to full screen.

Just catching up on the F1 from the weekend.

There we go! A reboot was indeed required as it's appeared here too

Cheers,

Steve

Another added bonus with this update is clearly improved video streaming. Tested it last night with an M2TS H264-encoded Blu-Ray rip, at 1080p quality, from my fileserver across a 54Mbps wireless connection and it was virtually faultless, less a couple of seconds of 'blip' over the 30 mins of video I tested it with. I also monitored my fileserver's bandwidth usage, with nothing else running and it was around 20% capacity, which I thought was very reasonable. This was using the PS3 Media Server program to handle the streaming. Excellent quality, with spot-on colour and depth reproduction and smooth rendering.

So they've been doing something behind the scenes :) Before I was finding it was annoying watching them across a wireless stream and I'd copy them to the PS3's HDD before watching.

Oooh will have to download this when i get back home this weekend :):)

Carl:thumbup:

I'm impressed.

We dont have freeview yet so the Iplayer thing is great for me.

I just bought myself a new ps3 looks good... Tesco has an introductory offer on at the moment... £229

Good man - 'Slim' or 'full fat' ? :D

slim id been holding out till the ps3 was below 250 and now the newer version came out i got that.... and GTA IV

Still waiting for MKV support courtesy of DivX

I've recently made the decision to ditch my hyper expensive HTPC and use the PS3, as it's quite happy streaming 1080p mkv files from my crappy old P4 using PS3 media server.

Would prefer to have them running directly though.

You could convert them using MKV2VOB

One thing that's very handy on the new software is that you can enable multiple audio outputs at the same time - I use mine with a TV and a monitor in different rooms and would ideally want to have audio out on the Optical output for one location and via HDMI in the other.

Previously you would have had to go into the settings and change it each time , but now you can leave both on. :D

That's good to know.

Always used to annoy me that. On the 360, if I had a quick session then sound through the TV was fine, swapping to surround sound through my amp for a decent gaming session.

Not able to do that on the PS3 until now it seems..!
