instrument cluster help?

Featured Replies

hi folks, i must admit i've never taken a felicia instrument cluster apart before:O

is it possible to swap the giant clock on the right for a rev counter?? or do i need to get a whole new cluster?

thanks:D

I believe it can be swapped. As long as you have an ECU that provides the signal for the Rev counter but I suspect you will.

It is a pain though...

You will need the steering wheel off, and trim from the top and bottom and the wheel. Disconnect the speedo cable to give more slack.

you can get them out without taking the steering wheel off... don't believe everything you read in the haynes maual

I've done this, but I think it's actually easier to swap the speedo you want to keep rather than change the other bits. I've also had issues with some instrument panels having resistors in line with some of the warning lamps on the dash, so there are a few things to watch out for, but it can be done.

I - think- that the circuit board for the one with the clock is different, but it was a rather hungover day when I did mine, so my memory isn't so good!

oh ok i get you i think?? so i need to find a cluster from a scrapper which has the rev counter in it, then swap my existing speedo head into it to preserve the correct mileage right?

Yeah, that's the easier way to do it - speedo is just 4 posi screws from the back once you've unclipped the clear plastic front and the black plastic surround for the instruments - a 5 minute job.

yes i think it can be done. Because rev counter was a very cheap optional equipment in Türkiye. i remember services easily changed the big clocks in LX versions with GLX rev counters :)

a year ago i took apart the instrument cluster. maybe pictures help for something :)

yeah sorry i should have updated this, i bought a glxi cluster with a rev counter for £20 from the breakers and it is a straight plug and plug swap, and everything worked first time... it is easy to change the speedo head, just 4 screws

did you change the whole cluster? or just swapped the clock with a rev counter? and did you find the cable from the ECU for the rev counter, even if the original cluster didn't have a rev counter?

You need to change the whole cluster - the other parts are different between the rev counter version and the clock one, IIRC. I fitted a rev counter one to a car that never had one originally (my rally car) and it worked fine straight away - the wiring was already there. Obviously yours may be different being a different country spec.

Interesting. So Skoda forced the lower spec models to be left with an analogue clock and no tacho when the cost was probably equal to them anyway.

I think there are quite a few examples where VAG do that sort of thing....and indeed many manufacturers.
