did I fix the air-con or am I imagining it?

Featured Replies

:tired: Hi. For some time now I've had intermittent working of the air con. Back at the end of June (you know that week we had summer) when it was 30 deg C, I got the gas topped up & I thought it got a little cooler on a long trip. On the return journey it did get cooler but took about 2 hours to get there. Since then I've fiddled about & I came to the conclusion that there was something more then just topping up the gas. I recollected that on the passenger side near the central fascia where air is pushed out to the floorwell, sometimes the filter had dropped down couple of times. I decided to have a feel around. No filter dropped down but a piece (3 inches X 2 approx) of plastic dropped off that looked as if it slid over something. Did the rest by feel & it felt as if it slid (didn't force it) over something. Switched air con on & I felt cold air coming through the vents almost immediately & that was with plastic gloves on. Took the car for a short spin & it certainly felt cold. Haven't been out since but will check again this week-end. Just wondered if anyone knows what I might have done or am I hallucinating?

THe plastic you are talking about is the cover for the pollen filter - if it's not on the air from the blower comes out in the passenger footwell not out of the vents.

Stick your head in the footwell and look up under the glovebox and you'll see it. It can sometimes be a fiddle to get on properly so probably worth checking.

I wonder if one of your direction flaps has popped out and fallen down blocking the system until you then removed it. Or maybe even one of the rear "closing" flaps from the vents them selves. does the plastic you found have a kinda rubbery edge to it?

If when you go back you still feel a good amount of chilled air.. check you can still get hot air to pass into the car.. and that the directional dial still work as they should.

If your filters still in place, and all the above works.. then it seems you have fixed it, but i'd be a little concerned as to where this plastic has come from.

any chance of a pic of the piece?

From what I can make out, the plastic is the bit that holds the pollen filter in; the bit visible as you look up at the assembeley.

Assuming you bit this bit of plastic back on, did you slide the two clips over to hold it on place? Visible if you look at the underside of the glovebox.

Anyway, if it was my car, I would just be pleased its working (as mine doesn't :().

Thanks all for the feedback. I'll get on my hands & knees in the morning & have a look at things & give it a further test.

I can confirm that this is the pollen filter cover clip you have found mate. I have only had my VRS for about 6 weeks and when I got it home I found the entire L shaped pollen filter cover in the glovebox, (although it took a little time to figure out where it had come from. It wasn't till Mrs Grr was driving one Sunday and I was in the passenger seat that I noticed the blast of air in the footwell even though the vent selector was on windscreen only. I got down there to have a butchers and hey presto!!! I had found where the mysterious bit of plastic had come from... I had to buy a pair of the slidey clip thingys as they were absent from the cover to pollen filter, Came to about £4.50 from Trans City Skoda Walthamstow. And the I simply re fitted the cover and my heater/aircon works properly now. Quick fix!!! Even a chimp could do it... I did...
