2.0 TDi - Weird Engine Buzz/noise when NOT running?

Featured Replies

Kinda as the title. I was washing the car today so put the wipers into the upright position. When I finished and turned the ignition on I noticed a buzz/drone/nnnnnaaahhh noise from the engine. never heard it before? It really is quite loud. It appears to come from the centre front pipe in the engine bay. There is some vacuum solenoid (?) device and a large pipe and twin wires going into another device. Excuse my ignorance in this engine bay. Never had a diesel before. If I was looking at a multipoint petrol injection I would know what I was looking at.

Anyway. this noise occurs at ignition on, carries on when engine is running, runs on for another 20 seconds when engine/ignition is turned off.

Any ideas? I'm quite worried about it as it is rather loud!

Possibly the EGR valve as that is front of the engine down near the rad. Mine made a ticking noise or almost like an electrical squeal before it let go last weekend :( currently in the garage being repaired

Ah! Could be. Expensive?

no idea as it is still under 3 mth dealer warranty (only brought 5 weeks ago ;)) so not gonna cost me jack

I did do some research though and your looking at about £160 for the part and not difficult to replace yourself (3 bolts and a connector).

Ah, yes, that looks like the part/area the noise is coming from. I've had the car just over a year so the Skoda Used car warranty has just run out :(

Good job I took out another warranty with Warranty Direct ;) Let's just hope they are as good as they promised to be!

If it was just finished then you may have got a goodwill gesture from Skoda ;)

Part 11

I replaced mine last year, reasonably easy to do, except the bolts go in from beneath and as I found easily drop in down onto the undertray!! flexible magnet does come in handy.

Mine makes a sort of weired noise after I turn the car off. Sounds like a similar sound to what you describe. Its almost like the turbo is shutting off but I know it isn't this. I'm not worried about it as its always been like this and i've had 9 months of perfect driving from the car.;)

F@*K ME! Just got the quote from the main stealers - £398.03!!! Part alone is £282.80

Thank God the warranty company is as good as its word and paying. Phew. Still got to pay the full amount myself and claim this back, less £50 excess.

Just had the phone call from the dealer to say that it was the EGR valve (or inlet manifold flap is another name) and is on order and will be ready by wednesday.

£282.00 seems a lot of money when people on ukmkivs have been saying around £160 plus VAT. Fitting is 2hrs I am guessing at their prices? Should be around half an hour for a competent mechanic!

Car is booked in on Friday to carry out the repair. BUT the noise has gone! Whisper quiet

I'm guessing I should still go ahead and get this done. I'll ask to keep the old part as a spare/out of interest/pass it on to some one more needy?

Their labour rates seem to be £95/hour as far as I can tell!!!

I think the replacement is unecessary if the noise is the only symptom. Mine has made the same noise since new and I've had no engine issues.

Mine went silent when the emissions workshop error light came on so I think mine was shagged :D

Hi,

Just had mine replaced for £328.80 at the dealers.

Just out of interest, what exactly does this part do?

Regards

Not too bad a price. I think the part shuts off all air to the inlet manifold to stop shut down shudder or running on. It snaps shut at shutdown and the little motor opens it again once the engine is off. I don't think is has any intermediate positions though I could be wrong.

Expensive of an on/off flap really.
