anyone??? this is my first post......

is this new or old shape?

Sounds like the wheel bearing to me. Are you attempting this yourself? It's a bit of a pig of a job apparently.

from what you have said it does sound like a worn wheel bearing to me! i replaced mine this year,i got mine from andrew pages(i have a trade account)they said one wheel bearing fits all octavias, mine fitted no problem,if your mechaniclly minded & experianced & have a press etc you can do the bearing yourself.i would get some prices for the bearing from the companys on this site!

if its a mk1 you can pick them up for around 25 quid, its the same as a golf bearing, mk2 are more expensive because they come with the hub

its a MK1 what site has the best price and quality? cheers

ok, it does points to be wheel bearing BUT do these checks..

Lift the passanger side off the ground, with one hand spin wheel fast and put other hand on suspention spring.....if you have wheel bearing gone you will feel vibration

again, lift the passanger side off the ground, hand brake up and chock wheels!!!!!!

Start the engine up, turn the traction control off put it in 3rd gear and slowly accelerate to approxinatelly 50mph. Then press the clutch pedal down, take it off the gear and turn engine off and listen at the spinning wheel. Do the same on the other side and you will be able to see exactly what wheel bearin is in trouble.

Litlle bit risky but it gives you a clear answer which wheel bearing is in trouble.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Look at gsf or vwspares websites. Also worth noting that the Mk4 Golf also share the same wheel bearing as the Octavia. I have changed three of these on my last Octavia and if it were me i would go for the Genuine one from Skoda ( like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/98-05-SKODA-OCTAVIA-A4-FRONT-WHEEL-BEARING-1J0498625_W0QQitemZ320389425012QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4a98b2a774&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) then you know it's a high quality bearing and will last.

Can also be cupping of the tyre. Try changing the tyres front to back and hear if the sound comes from a different angle.

I have some cupping problems with my tyres. Octavias and the other Golf V plattform cars are having these problems if the allignment isnt really top notch.

It gives the same noise as having a bearing problem. But I noticed it after changing back from winterwheels to my summerwheels, did swap the summerwheels from back to front at the same time.

And already did almost 12500 miles, this wouldnt be the fact if a bearing had gone bad.

Oops, just found out that I am in the Octi 1U forum. But just check out your tyres too.....
