Radio code retrieval

Featured Replies

Before i go along to my local dealer i thought i would ask if is there was anyone on here that can retrieve the code from the std Superb radio. (Grundig Symphony).

For some reason it is now showing 'SAFE' instead of the usual CODE that is used to when the battery has been disconnected.

There was no code with the car and the supplying dealer has no record of the code.(not surprising really as initially they denied that they had even supplied the car, until i informed them they had stamped the front of the service book as the suppling dealer - they then 'found' the cars details )

I was going to suggest Shark90 but he isn't exactly close to you...

Maybe worth seeing if there are any companies near you that can do it, car audio type people. I enquired of my local dealer and they wanted about £40 to do it as the car has to be hooked up to the computer and the code obtained directly from Skoda over the internet. It's not a case of looking it up unfortunately.

I did wonder that as the suppling dealer said that Skoda only changed the system a couple of years ago, so the car needed to be plugged in.

I then asked why they didn't have a log of the code (as the car is 5 years old), he couldn't answer that - confirms my thought of this dealer who were the only dealer to have 'service' the car from new (i use the word service VERY loosely!.

I have seen on google and eBay mention of software that has all the codes, all that is needed is the radio part No. the Symphony was included in the list of radios that the codes are available for.

I think that the dealers didn't have a list of codes before rather it was a case of looking it up online, just pop in the VIN and back comes the code. But it would have made sense to copy the code down and keep it for when the car came in for a service.

Usually they come back on themselves.

That is the case with the later mk1 octavia (2003 onwards at least) where the radio is coded to the car, mine would say SAFE for a few seconds then work. I'm not sure about the superb though.

This seems to be happening quite a lot lately.

I wonder if some recent ECU updates have altered the ability to auto recover from SAFE without dealer involvement.

After all, it's an easy money maker if the dealer's the only one that can issue the code, and only if connected to their diag machine.

When I spoke to the service manager at one dealer he thought it was a complete pain and gave me the phone number for a man in a van type outfit he knew of who could do it instead. Seems more like it was a "clever" idea from Skoda.

Tried that, get the beep, then SAFE and then the request for the code again.

My car has not been to a dealer for any work since i bought it 2 1/2 years ago (i do all my own work & diagnostics) not quite sure why it used to recover from SAFE mode by itself (at least 5 times) but now it wont?
