One key wont work...

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Ive had my car from new for 3 1/2 years now and just realised that the spare key wont actually start the engine. It locks & un-locks the doors no problem but when you fire it up the engine runs for a second or two and then the maxi dot says "engine immobiliser".

I took the car to my local dealer today who tried to re-programme the key but for some reason it wouldnt work. It looks like the only solution is to get a new transponder as it appears this is the part at fault (not the buttons so to speak). Part of me thinks dont bother as ive never needed the spare but now I know its duff you just know im going to need it and its going to cost about £100 (ish).

So, the question is has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know of an alternative fix?

I wonder if it is covered by the Sale of Goods act which says that it must be fit for purpose and if you can prove the problem has arisen from an original fault and not because of mistreatment then it should be covered for 6 years.

It might be worth asking for advice from your local trading standards office before approaching your dealer with any claim.

I had one key and never got around to ordering a new one because of the cost. When I dropped my car keys down a storm drain, 20 miles from home, I wished I had bit the bullet earlier!:o
