Background

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have been using photoshop for many years now. It's just the actual picture taking where I'm lacking skill.

I'm opening my own company. This question is in regards to the design work with the 'models' for posters and images.

Is it easier to take a picture with a model on a 'back drop' then remove the one block colour? Is there a best colour to use?

I have no idea about the how one works with the other. It may seem a really stupid question - I'm just looking for simple advice.

Thanks in advance,

Rob.

In theory your best bet is to take the photo with the backdrop colour you'll be wanting to use. Masking out hair and such to paste the model on another background is a horrible job. Shadows merge into dark backgrounds and highlights merge into white, so you often need to 'draw' lines that don't exist and spend extra time blending to a new background colour. Plus you can have colour tints from reflections that will need to be removed if the background changes from some bright colours.

If you 'must' mask out a background, choose one that's a mid-tone and that's colour isn't repeated in the models clothes/skin/hair/surfaces so you can mask out easier and see what needs to be removed.
