170CR v 140CR

I know that the 170CR won't be available until the end of the year and, as far as I can see, none have been tested yet but, for those familiar with the two engines in other vehicles, does the 170CR suffer the same relatively narrow power band as has been observed in the 140CR, especially when compared with the 1.8TSI?

I have to say that apart from the CO2 and MPG issues, the 1.8TSI appears to offer a much better drive (again, according to all those knowledgeable journalists;) and is higher up my list- - test drives await!

AFAIK the 170CR (along with the 170PD) has a wider rev range and 'stronger for longer' power/torque curve than the 140CR/PD engine. It is red lined at 4,500rpm and will run to 4,750+ without harm. :D;)

At the end of the day IMHO it will all boil down to your personal preference for type of engine; rev range is not the be all and end all.

Consider this comparing the 170CR vs 1.8TSI (160); bhp are not far apart, 0-62mph are equal at 8.4 sec, Vmax are within 1 mph @ 125 vs 124 but the 170CR has 40% more torque with 350Nm vs 250Nm and thus should have substantially better in gear acceleration. :D

Theory is that the RHD CR170s will be built from the beginning of November so hopefully delivery perhaps, fingers crossed, I hope by the end of November...

'The end of the year' just seems too far away somehow!

Having nigh on 170hp plus buckets of torques in the vRS (post remap) I felt the urge to go for a similar power/torque set-up on the Snow-Monster, hence the CR170 order. Obviously heavier than the Fabia but it is the in gear acceleration of the diesel that is just so brilliant it had to be done again (and the fuel economy of course, he adds, thinking of the planet :) )

I have seen several tests and no one has managed to get the 140bhp diesel anywhere near the 9.9 seconds 0-60, Skoda somewhat optimistic - as it seems to be more like a leisurely 11 seconds.

That would put the 170bhp at low 9 point something not 8.4 typically.

I now wouldn't even consider a 140bhp without a Bluefin remap device or something like it now.

Would have liked the 1.8TSI; was very impressed with the Octavia 1.8T 20v 4x4 I had a few years back, much smoother than the diesel, sadly not a financially viable option.

So I have opted again for the TDI 140, which appears possible better in CR form than PD albeit gagged by a DPF.

Regard performance would not read much into that, most of the cars tested being low mileage or pre-production. Took my previous Golf TDI 4motion 20,000 miles to start to loosen up properly, then the Snow-monster appeared over the horizon so all change.

Back to the winged arrow fold again.:)

P.S. TDI 170 starts production along with the 110 WK45, should be able to get your build week from the dealer.

I think the difference is hyperbolical - I tried the 140cr, liked it and ordered it.

anyway most of the time I will be stuck in traffic or ambling down a country lane full of potholes

This is true of all manufacturers figures though, they are all determined under preset conditions which in the real world will never be met. I would expect all the figures on that page to be slightly higher.

Should be one advantage of DSG though - flooring the accelerator with DSG in Sport mode should, I would have guessed, give a 0-60 in line with the makers data, but of course only -as already mentioned - once the engine has loosened up.

(Slightly academic point of course on the Yeti since no DSGs around as yet and no interesting DSGs (1.8 petrol or 170 diesel) on the horizon at all. But AIUI there's too much torque on a powerful diesel, eg as in Golf GTD, to give a smooth DSG experience, not that I've driven one myself - just dealer and review comments, which all seem to agree.

And to be still more academic, what a shame that 30-70 figures are not used more than 0-60 - much more relevant to real-world driving than 0-60. I really never want to blast off the line on a 0-60 sprint, but there are often times when I'm doing 20-30 eg coming off a roundabout having been behind a supermarket artic for 10 minutes and want to get round it asap if the road's clear. An all-day everyday experience unfortunately if you live in more rural parts where the 'A' roads may still be busy but dual carriageways are a rarity.)

Well at least Yeti has 4x4.

I'm thinking of this more as 'Quattro' to help with traction off the line. It will be particularly useful on the CR170, which in the Octavia you are unable to use full throttle in 1st or 2nd, but in Yeti should be no trouble at all. :D
