VRS - Cost of a new rear caliper?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

After having my rear pads changed the other day my N/S rear brakes have been binding and so this morning I took a closer look. After getting the caliper off the carrier and pulling the pads out I had a look at the slide pins and they worked smoothly, but winding back the piston in and out of the caliper was ruddy hard work - I had a right sweat on when I'd finished. Compared to the other calipers I've dealt with this seemed rather reluctanct so I'm wondering if it's new caliper time for that side.

The seal over the piston is intact and everything looks ok, it's just hard to shift the piston after pushing it out with the pedal each time.

Does anyone know how much a new caliper is for the rear on these things? I imagine it's a dealer only job considering the colour etc?

Thanks,

Chris.

iirc my O/S one was £76

i got it from a factors but needs painting, i think they are about £70 from somewhere like TPS

Devonutopia has a pair of rear calipers for sale, i was going to have them , but have now fixed the problem i had with the handbrake

is your handbrake lever on the caliper releasing fully ?

Ooooh....I wonder if it could be this causing the issue.

I don't have springs like that - I've got like a rubber bung thingy. I wonder if it could be the hand brake staying on slightly......hmmm....

Rubber bung thing? Let's have a picture maybe, these wind in/out rear callipers are quite a bit difficult to get back in, in fact I once thought that my B5 Passat ones had seized when I went to change the discs and pads. Sometimes (I think), it might help if you move the handbrake lever back a bit. I think that it helps if you set aside a bit of time once a year to clean the brakes up and re-zero the handbrake adjustment fully. I tend to scrub clean the metal inset clips so that the pads can move easily - and leave them dry as they are meant to work dry (and clean).

The more I think about it the more I suspect the handbrake. I focused all my attention today on the piston retraction I never thought to look at the handbrake lever on the caliper.

Bung wise, on the photos on the other thread, where people have fitted springs I seem to have a round rubber ring attached, like a sink plug. My wif'e's out with the car at the mo so I can't get any pics but I will post some up. Weird looking things they are and I'm not sure what they do.

Another thing I noticed was that the new pads that have been put on are slightly bigger than the old ones and cover more of the disc. As a result the lip that had built up on the disc was now being hit by the face of the pad. I took the disc off today and sanded the lips down so they're flush again (they were only small) and now the pads no longer scuff against them. No idea what pads were on before but I doubt they were genuine, or even the right size for that matter.
