MOT Question

Featured Replies

The dreaded MOT is under 2 weeks away, and i suddenly realised that i don't have a car jack anymore (long story, but basically it got bent).

Will i need one for the MOT?

Also, i was advised on my last service that my console bushes are perishing, so will this be a fail/advisory?

I will be getting them changed ASAP but funds are low right now and i can't get it done before pay day (the day of the MOT).

Cheers for any help or info.

I don't think you have to have one, but don't quote me on that. I assume cars that don't have a spare don't have a jack either.

Just checked one of the haynes manuals I got lying around and that makes no mention of spare or jack in the list of MOT tests. Also thinking back to my last MOT I don't remember the assortedcrap I carry around being moved around after the test.

You won't need the jack as it's not checked - they don't even check the spare tyre :)

If the bushes just have surface cracks then that's pretty normal. It's only if they have play that you'll be pulled up on it. Might be worth getting an early MOT then seeing if a local place can fit you in on the day if the work needs doing. You might get a free retest or just a partial retest fee that way.

Cheers Guys.

I didn't think the Jack would be an issue, but i will need to get one 'just incase' so it can wait untill after the MOT.

Just the bushe's that could cause me problems then.... i might get the Cupra ones this week and leave them in the car, and if the current ones do fail, i can book the car in to get the new ones fitted at the same garage and avoid a re-test fee (i would hope).

I would try a scrappers for a replacement jack, god knows what the dealer would want for one. The other option would be to buy a cheap trolley jack and keep that in the car. You can get one from Screwfix or Machinemart for about £20. Then you just need a piece of wood with a groove in, or similar to avoid the squashed sill problem.

Did we ever reach a conclusion in one of the other threads about if there are safe jacking points inside the sills, and where they are?

The jacking points are inside the sills and are clearly defined. They are strengthened by a section of corregated steel. If you put your hand behind the jacking point you can feel them. They can vary in size. As an example, my MK.1 TDi has hardened areas 6" x 3" at the front and 6" x 1" at the rear.

Ah, groovy - shall take a gander at that later :)

OI!!

Stop hiJACKing the thread!

;)

Defo; dont need the jack...spare tyre only comes into play if it is strapped on the underside of car and then its only to make sure its secure..... reverse lights, nearside fog are not testable items as well

As for your console bushes they should only fail if they have excessive movement

One quick question, sorry to waver off topic slighty:

Do front fog lights need to work?

Thanks, Joe

:)No they don't.

Excellent - thanks.

The jacking points on the sills are marked by having a small triangle pressed into the panel just above them.
