Best Cage Mod Silicon Grease?

Hiya guys, having read a little on the cage mod, i'm thinking of doing it

on my octy vrs pd. Was wondering which was the best silicon grease product to use

on the MAF? Anybody done this mod recently? :confused:

Not yet done mine, but bought Silicone Grease from Maplins ready to do so...

I bought the £3.99 tube rather than the aerosol.

I've used this stuff on both our cars.......worked a treat :thumbup::thumbup:

Cheers to you both, i'll get the tube grease then from Maplins.

I just got the first SIlicon Grease I found on a local hardware store.

It worked really well and eliminated all the residual stuttering of town stop-starting.

I'm going to apply it to all family cars.

Do a search. It relates to applying grease to the MAF connector. Sounds like snake oil, but apparently it works!

Incidentally, the orignal 'Cage' (a guy from Ohio, USA) who devised this 'mod' says this:

"One thing I noticed is that some people just put goop on the contacts of the plug. You need to fill up the whole socket so that when you plug it in, the silicone fills all voids and forces all air out. I first filled the socket to the point that the silicone was even with the ends of the pins of the MAF. I then plugged it in (it farted). I then unplugged it and put a wad of goop on the plug itself and plugged it in again. It required a little wiggling to get it to plug in as it was forcing both silicone in and air out. That is how you get complete insulation of the connection. Mine has been running perfectly for 2 months now. FILL IT UP!!!!!!! It is now vacuum sealed, meaning if I try to unplug it there is a big suction there. The reason for this is because it fully insulates the connection and also seals it off from any environmental influences. Now the car starts perfectly in the morning regardless of temp or humidity etc..."

Where exactly is the plug described in this mod on the PD 105 engine? Is it the one that sticks out of the inlet air duct above and to the right of the engine block?

Did it today, after having the grease sat in a drawer for a while.

I'm surprised to say, as I approached it with much cynicism, that it does seem to be running slightly smoother. The big difference which I really wasn't expecting is the smell of the exhaust - it's much cleaner! Since removing the DPF my exhaust has smelled seriously evil, to the point where you couldn't sit stationary with the windows down for very long. Now it just smells like my old PD105 did, maybe even less.

The problem I have though is I can't get the connector back off. I appear to have created the world's most perfect vacuum. I've tried combing prising and pulling to no avail. :( Any ideas? I can't even make out whether the tab on the connector is engaged or not. The end of the female plug is sitting I'd say 3mm from the plastic around the base of the male connector. Could somebody with a PD170 / PD140 have a look at theirs and see how much of a gap there's meant to be and let me know?

Doesn't it clip?

Because of the sheer amount of sheer amount of grease I've packed in it, I'm not sure. I don't think I definitely felt it clip the last time I put it on, but just not sure. Either way, I can't get it off.

Good to hear that people are actually doing this mod. I've still gotta get hold of

the grease to do it. It does sound like it does work. I was driving my pd vrs the other day to work and the dpf recharge kicked in and car was stuttering a bit. It even does it when dpf isn't recharging sometimes. The maf signals getting corrupted by external conditions - dampness/heat/dirt etc would explain the engine hesitating/stuttering/surging. Gotta get my a*se in gear and get that mod done!! :rolleyes:

Drive down to Warrington over the weekend and I will stick some DC04 in it, I will be in Lowton on Saturday afternoon with my daughter horse riding if it helps?

Used this...not made it worse, 'possibly' smooooothed things out a little.

Cheers for that Fluffmeister, might just take you up on that offer. Although I may end up working on Saturday!! Don't wanna mess you about. I may be able to order some DC04 from Farnell. I believe you can get it from here??? I might be wrong. Where did you get yours from? I sold my Furby vRS to my sis recently - thats how I bought my Octy! Could probably do with some grease for the maf on her car too!

When you do this, don't do what I did and drop the cap off the tube in the engine bay. I've had to just put some cling film on the tube. :) That's the second thing I've lost in there this week! :rolleyes:

Last Saturday I took my good grease and refilled the MAF connector to fill all the vacuum with grease then, as a bonus, I found and treated the other three connectors around the engine I could find (one near the f*******g DPF, BTW, one at near 11 o'clock, one at 7 o'clock, if I remember well).

This morning car was definitely sweeter to drive, willing to rev. I did the same to dad's car. Next is SWMBO's.

I did my Tiger this weekend, all the connections for the ECU as well along with the connectors for the throttle bodies as I have so much of the DC04 left.

Again, an improvement in starting and idling as triumph use a lot of steel / tin plated connectors in the fuelling system.

It's a great little inexepensive mod the cage mod, and even if on some car's it's more of a placebo, got to be merit in cleaning and waterproofing electric connectors.

I finally got round to doing the cage mod this weekend and it has made a difference. Like others on here, i had my doubts as to whether this mod would do anything but my car definitely runs a bit smoother. Ok, it aint a massive improvement but it has improved the driveability of the car and this surely has got to be a good thing. Chuffed considering i've only spent a few quid on a tube of dc04! :D

I have filled the holes in the in the MAF sensor, but after reading here(if i am correct) that some people are filling up the whole sensor?

Can you tell a thicko how much grease to put in and which part of the sensor do i fill?

Any pictures would be much appreciated.

Am i supposed to fill up the whole part of the sensor that is fixed to the pipe of the airfilter?(i.e is this the male part that people are talking about.
